Geodon for depression? - Need advice!

Posted by SLS on November 26, 2002, at 21:39:15

Hi all.

Has anyone had success adding Geodon to antidepressants when treating depression? I recently added Zyprexa to Nardil and have had good results. However, it seems that I have already begun to gain weight - ten pounds in two weeks. I am contemplating switching from Zyprexa to Geodon, but I am reluctant to make the change without hearing some success stories.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

- Scott

Hi Scott,

I have had tremendous success with a combination of Geodon (120 mg) and Celexa (30 mg). Depression is part of my diagnosis, along with a psychotic disorder. My depression has at this point lifted completely. I also do not have any more psychotic symptoms.

I was on the Geodon without the antidepressant and I was extremely depressed, so in my experience Geodon does not work as an antidepressant. I know that it is somewhat common to use antipsychotics in non-psychotic patients, but at least for me, Geodon alleviates psychosis only, and my antidepressant alleviates depression and anxiety. So I don't think it is a great idea to use an antipsychotic agent for a non-psychotic condition, but I suppose it is worth trying if nothing else works.

I hope you find a medication that's right for you.

Scott,

My last pdoc consulted someone from NYC who was involved with clinical trials for Geodon -- in her words, a "Geodon Specialist". Anyway, he told her that higher doses are needed for depression. I had a decent anti-depressant response from Geodon and I was only on 80mg. I stopped the med because at the time I was in the habbit of starting and stopping things... I don't know how effective it ultimately would've been, but I consider it one of the better meds I've been on -- both in terms of effects and side-effects. If it means anything, I did have an especially good response when I combined Geodon with Nardil.

Good Luck,
Jon
