Lamictal and tiredness - need answers

Posted by Margit on November 14, 2002, at 19:56:49

I have been on 12.5mg of Lamictal for 12 days now. I get extremly tired from it (I take it in the am). Does anybody now if this is a temporary side effect? Will it get better or worse with dosage increase? In 2 days I am to take another 12.5mg in the pm. I am somewhat scared, because I don't know what to expect.

Any experiences (good or bad) are appreciated.

Thanks

Margit

Hi Margit,

Tiredness is a fairly unusual side-effect with Lamictal actually. It's quite an activating med., and often causes initial irritability and insomnia, which tend to suside with time.
Seems like you've been spared these common side-effects, and I'd guess that the tiredness will abate too in time,as you adjust and move up the dose range (unless of course you're taking anything else which might be the culprit).
Stick with it, it's a really unique med. and very effective for many, myself included.

Take care,

Col.

I'm at roughly 65mg- I say roughly because I'm splitting some 100mg pills at the moment.I get the irritability thing shortly after taking the med. in the morning, as I slowly increase the dosage. My target dose is 75mg- I'm highly med. sensitive, so this should see me through for a while.Perhaps I'll reach 100mg eventually.
I also take 200mg neurontin, which seems to complement Lamictal very well - counteracts any irritability.(I get zero irritability at 50mg, but I'm experimenting with my therarapeutic 'window').
This is by far the best med. I've stumbled across. How are you doing on it, and at what dosage?

Geez! I just started taking Lamictal (couple weeks) and I HAVE noticed INcreased irritability! Does the Lamictal really cause this? If so, how long before it subsides? I am not going to try and increase the dosage however.

I've also noticed irritability in the last couple of days since I decreased Neurontin. Time to go back up.

Hi there,

With me at least, the irritability/anger tends to last around 3 weeks or so, and then just stop abruptly, leaving me with greatly reduced depression and a greater resilience towards stress- I never thought I'd get beyond 25 mg originally, but I'm nudging towards 75mg right now.

All the best,

Col.
