Hello, i have a few questions and comments. Only response i would like is a defenite positive answer. Ok i use ghb approx 6-10grams a day. Iv read that taking a low dose of a benzodiazipine (i take .25mg of xanax 2x a day) will reduse ghb side effects such as twitching, minor siezure like symtoms wich occure when taking ghb. It actually works when taking xanax and when i stop xanax, i feel more overstimulated and feel more prone to seizure like symptoms from ghb.
Now is this theory correct that GABA drugs, esp ghb, will reduce the seizure threashold, thus taking a gaba enhancing drug will increase teh seizure threashold?
Another question is, my doc added gabaril to wean me off xanax, or to take xanax at a low dose. Could i just stop taking xanax and increase gabtril and get the same effects to counteract ghb seizure like symptoms,esp when withdraws take effect.

> genoYou are right that GHB binds to the gaba B receptor. Benzodiazapiens act as GABA A potentiators, that is, they make GABA A receptors more likely to bind GABA. Both benzodiazepiens and GHB are able to reduce glutamate type (cannot remember the technical name here) seizures, that is the type that is most often associated with epileptics, all the twitching and muscle spasms/rigidity type of side effects. However, both are also able to increase the likelyhood of what is known as an absence seizure. In this type, the person will stop suddenly, if they are talking they will stop mid sentence, etc. and stay in the stopped position for a few seconds, then resume again as if nothing had happened. At most, they might have a facial twitch. This usually isn't a problem if one is only using benzo's to counteract epilepsy, but if you are using benzo's+ghb, then the risk is much more significant, while the risk of the glutamate type of seizures will be practically nil. Some people get absence seizures while only taking ghb though, especailly if they are using high doses and have a predisposition towards seizures.
The only time you might have to worry about the glutamate type is when coming off ghb if you have been using it chronically (ie, you come off one dose and immediately have another before the dopamine rebound sets in) and then suddenly come off cold turkey.
The reason you feel overstimulated when you come off the xanax is likely because xanax usually produces a tolerance after only a few weeks, thus, while you are not on xanax it is similar to taking the opposite of a benzodiazapien.
I know nothing about gabtril, from what I have stated above I believe you will be able to figure out for yourself what to do.

Geno,
Years ago, when GHB was still legal, I overdosed on the stuff. I passed out and had a seizure. I'll never forget the way I felt right before the seizure. I felt electric shocks traveling along my forearm (along the "funnybone" nerve) and my hands started clenching and unclenching without me "telling" them to (as if I was trying to do one-handed claps). That was the last thing I remember before losing consciousness. Gabitril made me feel the exact same way along the same nerve...and I had some twitching in my hands that mimicked my GHB experience. In other words, I felt like the Gabitril but me in a pre-convulsive state identical to the state I was in prior to my GHB induced seizure. I don't know what the significance of this is...but, if you're comming *off* Xanax, taking GHB and adding Gabitril...man...I would be really careful.Good luck,

I just started on Gabatril. My Dr gave me samples and I took the first 2 mg pill this morn. The only thing I am noticing for side effects is a little nausea. I did eat some toast right after taking it, so I guess I will just have to hope it subsides after my body adjusts. I had been taking Neurontin. What did you take before gabatril? My Dr said I may have some initial cognitive effects, which has me a little worried. Any info or personal experience is appreciated.
