Gershon: Verapamil not mentioned in your talk

Posted by susan C on November 8, 2002, at 13:06:08

First, thank you for making yourself available to this forum.

Can you talk about how Verapamil works as a second line medication to Depakote for bipolar two? I would be interested in knowing how they work together, and also, if you are familar with any studies that have been, or are currently being done, and what/where they are.

Mouse, I know your question is for the doc, but I wanted to ask you.

My pdoc nixed the verapamil (given your excellent results I wanted to give it a try). He said that with my tendency to be easily sedated, he thought it wouldn't be good for me. Do you find verapamil sedating?

Hi Dinah,
You know, I have read that as a side effect, but I dont find it sedating at all. And, I too, am easily sedated, and am generally senitive to all medications (it doesnt take much to get some kind of effect; I generally consider myself to be one of the "2%").

So, go figure?

There are reports of Verapamil and other calcium channel blockers helping bipolar disorder when other treatment agents didn't work. It just wasn't possible to list all possible treatments, but this type of agent is one that can be particularly valuable.

Regarding verapamil/ccb,

1.I would be interested in knowing (if anybody does:) how it works on BP.

2. Also, if you are familar with any studies that have been, or are currently being done, and what/where they are.

Thank you again.
susan C.
