What do you know, experiences with RESPERIDOL??

Posted by Janelle on August 17, 2001, at 23:39:20

Hi, my dear friend I've posted on behalf of who's suffering severe depression and anxiety has now been prescribed Wellubtrin IR (taken a few times through the day) and Resperidol (anti-psychotic because she does say and think some "weird" things). I know nothing about Resperidol and would like to hear about it from folks on here, particularly those with personal experience taking it. What does it do, what are possible side effects, etc.?

I'm on Zyprexa (for strong anxiety and sleep problems), so I'm particularly curious about what the differences might be between these two meds; why I was given Zyprexa, while my friend was given the other one. THANKS.

Hi Janelle,
According to my psychiatrist, Zyprexa and Risperdal are similar except that Risperdal supposedly has less sedation and less weight gain than Zyprexa. My pdoc would use them interchangeably. That is, if one didn't work then the other was the next choice.

With both Zyprexa and Risperdal, anecdotal observations suggest that they work differently at low doses than at high doses, so experimentation with dosing is needed. Generally lower doses are more appropriate for depression, while medium to higher doses are appropriate for other symptoms.

Risperdal has been a big help for me. I take it to augment my cocktail and it is making all the difference. I do .5mgs twice a day. I think it makes my eyes more sensitive to light. But, it is giving me energy and I feel the way I know I should feel. No poop-out in sight, knock on wood.

I only *wish* the two were interchangeable.

Geodon was developed precisely to compete with Zyprexa, for it is not supposed to cause weight gain. I found it, however, totally different, fatiguing and rotten.

My Mom is currently on resperidol and still having delusions and anxiety. She is bipolar and had been lithium controlled for the last 20 or so years. Due to kidney damage they have taken her off of the lithium and this has lead to several hospitalizations and a lot of stuff she never did before. I have had negative experiences with resperidol being used with young psychotic children including tremendous weight gain and uncontrolable surges of irritability or anger. Not quite the mix we were hoping for. Hope someone knows something we don't because our family is getting worn out.
