Hello,
this is my first time posting here so i'll introduce myself a little. I'm suffering from an anxiety disorder with depression caused by some traumatic events. I'm currently taking 50mg of paxil, 37.5mg of effexor, and 15mg of serax for sleeping. I'm a little concerned about taking the effexor at the same time as the paxil. I have yet to find any information about the two being diagnosed together. does this also put me at risk for serotonin syndrome? any onformation you have about the combination of these two drugs together would be greatly appreciated

Jeez!
I've never heard of that much Paxil being prescribed WITH another AD! The normal therapeutic dose for Paxil is 20 mg. if I'm not mistaken...and you should ramp up slowly because Paxil is pretty harsh. Did your psychiatrist prescribe this? Or a general practitioner? I'm not the expert, though. Just someone who took Paxil for about a year @20mg.

Seretonin syndrome will most likely happen at the beginning of a perspription adjustment. It you've been doing well with this medication then it is unlikely that it will spontainiously happen. Whatever you do, just make medication adjustments slowly.

Effexor is the most powerful SRI we have so I do not see why it would not be better to just try to up the Effexor first before you add another med.
Did the doc state their reasoning ? If you have not gotten a good reason for adding another of a basically same class of med, I would ask some more questions. There are cost issues here, and I think a doc need to justfy the cost of adding another med.If you decide to add another med, keep in mind the general rule that many psyco meds effect the level of other psyco meds, if taken together. Generally there will be an increase level of one or both, if taken together. Start with a small dose when adding a another psyco med.
This is the end of the thread.
