Yesterday was only my second day at a tiny dose of Risperdal (.25 mg) and while I haven't noticed any results, last night I found I wasn't sleepy and just didn't go to sleep until 5 am. Yesterday and today, I didn't feel hungry and basically ate one small meal each day. I really wasn't hungry today at all, but ate something anyway around 5 pm.
Is this just one of those wacky things, or could it be related to the Risperdal?

I might be feeling a bit wired/buzzy too, although also rather flat if that makes any sense. Of course that might be the lack of sleep.

Dinah:Give it a few weeks...and you also may want to try adding a small dose of an antidepressant you can tolerate. It's a bit of a wacky ride, trying to balance the a.d. and Risperdal, but I will admit with the Risperdal, I have not had the horrid crying spells and major outbursts of anger I was having. I find you do need a tiny dose of an a.d. atleast to prevent the 'flat' feeling you mentioned.
Let me know how you do...and I will do the same for you! Best wishes..
Jay

Dinah,
I'm reading up on Bipolar Disorders.
Could the not needing sleep, the appetite suppression, and the buzzy feeling be a result of a possible beginning of a Manic State?
I'm not sure. I'm still reading about Bipolar Disorders and I might be seeing "Manic" everywhere right now... LOL ;-)
Take Care,
Simcha

It could be, Simcha, or at least a hypomanic state. I upped my Depakote and Klonopin, and although I slept badly last night I did sleep. And I napped a bit during the day. I think it may just be a bit activating so I'm going to try taking it in the morning rather than in the evening.
The lack of appetite has me stumped though. It happens to me sometimes, but usually only when I'm agitated. This is the third day when I really didn't want to eat at all, but ate one small meal which didn't even really taste right. All the food tasted way too strong. Sort of like when I was pregnant.
Oh well, at least I'm going to lose weight out of this.
I'm not sure if I feel any other effects. Because it's energizing, I am getting a bit more work done, I think. And my emotions may feel a bit more distant. I may possibly feel a bit flat. But my husband says it looks to him as if I'm in a better mood. Go figure.
I might ask pdoc if I can go up to .5 mg.

Thanks Jay. I did read that this was a really good combination for you. I'm a bit afraid of the SSRI's because in the past they caused terrible flatness and anorgasmia in me. But I have been giving some thought to Lexapro. I guess it depends on how things work out with the Risperdal and with other things. Flat might not be altogether bad. But anorgasmia is always bad.
I really think mood stabilizers are the meds of choice for me. I've only occasionally had trouble with depression, and I've got my OCD under control (usually) with cognitive behavior techniques. The AP is supposed to stop my meltdowns that last approximately one week and occur every couple of months. Time will tell whether the meltdowns are more unpleasant than the Risperdal.
Do you have a problem with lack of appetite or a bit too much activation on the Risperdal? Does food taste a bit too strong?
Thanks,
Dinah

Trying to find info on this med. My experiences have included a child I work with who had extreme hunger and thirst - which led to weight gain and also some anger and manic swings. (he is non-verbal and low functioning so didn't have the opportunity to tell me what was up) and a family member who has been trying to leave lithium. She is having some delusions and paranoia but does seem somwhat more focused. I have also noticed the flat affect and she tells me her water tasts dreadful to her. Good luck with your changes. I appreciate the info.

About the too strong taste of food and my lack of appetite. But he trotted out the standard "I'm sure these are start up effects and will taper off" anyway. I guess he thinks imaginary side effects also disappear with time. :)
This is the end of the thread.
