Anyone get this bad side-effect from Stims?

Posted by Festus on October 31, 2002, at 22:35:15

Howdy Ya,ll,
I,m currently on Methadone,Paxil, and Xanax for Chronic Pain and depression. My pain dr. also gave me some Adderrall for fighting drowsiness.I,ve noticed after taking it for a few days,I,ll get these canker sores in my mouth and blisters on my tongue. They hurt so bad,I,ll have to lay off the Adderrall for several days, then they go away. The same thing happened when He tried me on Ritalin. What,s the deal? Those stims are life-savers on certain tiring days.I ain,t said nuthin to my doc yet.Any feedback? Festus

I haven't experienced the side-effects you've described. However, I'd recommend trying Provigil as an alternative to combat the sedation. Ask your pdoc about it.

I don't know if this may be causing your problems but stimulants like Adderall & Ritalin can make your mouth drier. It reduces saliva flow & can increase the possibility of canker sores & tongue blisters.

This has come up before (in a slightly diff form) in this forum & it's a good idea to buy a toothpaste that doesn't contain any SLS or sodium lauryl (or laureth) sulfate. It helps toothpaste foam but it's quite irritating to some people & dries out the mouth even more.

Rembrandt makes a SLS free toothpaste (you need to check the ingredient list) & so does Biotene. Both will significantly reduce the frequency of canker sores.

I had some odd side effects from Provigil, but I think it had to do with the antidepressants my doctor tried in combination with it. My mouth broke out in canker sores and I couldn't get enough water. My blood pressure and pulse also shot up, and I kept getting a fluttering feeling in my chest.

I felt more awake, but I could tell it was the drug--it didn't feel normal to me.

My doc let me sample Provigil,it didn,t do much, also I have no insurance right now and pay for my meds out-of-pocket.Provigil is very costly. It makes sense about the stims not mixing well with one of the other meds I take and the info Jon gave about toothpaste is good ,too.I thank you for the feedback.Whats the most cost effective Stim out there?
