I've asked my doc for a trial of SOMA to help me sleep - I've been getting so anxious around bedtime that I don't get to sleep until 3-4am. Yes, yes yes - I am very good with the sleep hygiene rules (we all should know them by heart). I do exercises I learned in therapy to help calm my mind - and they don't work. Hot baths, warm milk, cold milk - nothing. 100mg Benedryl - nothing. Ambien just stopped working.
So, I thought SOMA - my brother was on it for a while and he said he slept very well.
Anyone have any experiences with it?

Soma is muscle relaxer, not a sleep med, generally. I would sugest 7.5-15 mgs Remeron
instead.

" I was sleeping well with Seroquel - bbut I hate to take that just as a sleep agent when it effects to many receptors AND it pooped out on me. Ambien pooped out on me too (it usualy does every now and then). I thougth about Remeron, (as I have been on it before and had terrible nightsweats and nightmares)but I'm having such a terrible time with weight gain that I didn't want to add it to the mix.
I have had terrible bouts of insomnia for the last 11 years and the only thing that really got me back on track was Nembutal. I only used it for 4 weeks. It was wonderful - it just turned everything off. I slept wonderfully all through the night and had no hangover and no ill effects towards my mood. But, difficult to convince a pdoc to prescribe it. However, if the insomnia keeps up I will end up in the looney bin.
Anyway, thanks for your advice......
:-) Jerry

I only know about one drug--Serzone. I got insomnia, and I tried Trazodone, Xanax, Zoloft, Gabitril, and combos of those. Ambien didn't even work for me the first time I used it, and the others (except Zoloft, which was stupid) worked for a month and pooped out. Benedryl sent me to the hospital, as I become restless and agitated. (Nyquil, however, still does it for me when I'm feeling ill.)
I have anticipatory anxiety more than I have insomnia. That means I am so afraid I'm going to have insomnia that I give myself anxiety about it and can't sleep. Serzone made that go away. It took two weeks, and my sleep returned to normal at 300 mg. It slows metabolism and maybe makes you eat, but I have lost 20 lbs. recently, so it can be overcome. It also has NO sexual side effects. (In fact, I have orgasms in my sleep at least twice a month!)
Sonata also works for me, even though it's the shorter-acting version of Ambien. You might want to try a Sonata at bedtime and another when you wake. They are four-hour pills, and some people respond to one and not the other.

Try Desbutal. It's Desoxyn (Methamphetamine HCL) and Nembutal in one pill. And if you want, it also comes in a syrup solution.
Just ask for a specialist in the year 1965...
or how 'bout Quaaludes... ? goodness, why are all the best, most effective treatments abused out of the marketplace?

> or how 'bout Quaaludes... ? goodness, why are all the best, most effective treatments abused out of the marketplace?I never have abused any prescription medicine - including Dexedrine and Nembutal and benzos. I only took Nembutal for a4 weeks as prescribed by a doc (not by a street pharmacist). Correct me if I have read you incorrectly - I have no desire for street drugs nor do I wish to drive to Mexico and buy 300 tabs of Vicodin. It would be an absolute miracle if a medication actually made me - DARE I say? Good?

no, I was referring to those who abuse them and as a result limit those of us who don't to fewer treatment options.
