tianeptine - effectiveness? side effects?

Posted by gladi on October 24, 2002, at 8:42:34

It's been so long since I had tianeptine that I really don't remember how I felt when I was taking it. I don't remember any notable, negative side effects. Anyway, I decided last month that I wanted to try it again, to see if it would help with my pervasive misery. I ordered from IAS on 10/1, received confirmation that said they would email me when the order was shipped on 10/3, and have heard nothing from IAS since then. I plan to email them tomorrow if I have not heard from them as of that date.

Has anyone else had trouble with IAS lately?

Thank you in advance for your assistance, advice, and general moral support.

Gladi

Hi Gladi,

I am planning on checking with my Dr on the possibility of tianeptine for me. I have OCD and bipolar disorder, and can't find an AD without intolerable side effects. The best one so far was Serzone, but with all the liver hoopla, I'm afraid to continue on it. I was tested and am fine though, but am too afraid of it to continue, plus I think it caused some sexual side effects as well. From what I understand the tianeptine is a 3rd generation tryciclic with positive cognitive properties, and very low incidence of side effects. Could you keep me up to date on your progress when it finally does arrive, and I will do the same if I get some.

Thanks,
Elsie

I have been taking tianeptine for about 2 months now. the severe depression is gone, and the anhedonia much better. Although I still have some dysthymia, I have a sense that this, too is gradually improving. I have noticed NO side-effects; my sexual life is thankfully back to normal after 8 trying years on Prozac, and I have a feeling of greater mental quickness. I don't think this drug is as powerful for severe depression as the SSRIs, but it's certainly much nicer to take if you can. And I love knowing that this is the one AD, at present, which will really protect the hippocampus and allow it to, maybe, regain its normal architecture.

In France, where it was originally developed, there are reports that it goes on getting more effective with up to a year of use. It has less impact than an aspirin. At first you think it isn't doing a thing, but after several weeks you suddenly start to realize how much better you are feeling. At least, that has been my experience- I hope you have just as good a one!

The positive response rate for it is just like the SSRI's- about 68%

Hi,

You really are encouraging to me. I have just concluded a trial of Sam-e, (all it did was make me tired after a month of usage). I really want to try the tianeptine. I know others on this board have not felt it was effective, but maybe they didn't stay on it long enough. I know now for sure that the Sam-e didn't work, because I feel better now that I am off it. Do you obtain yours from the same place as Gladi? Have they been reliable for you? I guess it is worth a try for me. The worst case is I am out is $59.00, but if it works it could make a big difference in my life. Do you know if they will ever have it available in the US?

Thanks,
Elsie

As to the future availablity of tianeptine in the US, I should probably direct you to my post on Psychobabble, of October 20, so as not to repeat myself more than I already have! As far as I can tell, xxx is reliable; the medications seem properly packaged, but you do have to allow 3-4 weeks for delivery.

Please don't use this site to exchange information on how to import into the US prescription medication without a prescription:

HI Dr. Bob -

Did you know that many prescrip meds are legally available overseas without prescription. Are you blocking info on these legal issues as well?

Thx
Chad
