When switching from depakote to an MAOI, how long should the washout period be?
thanks

I quit taking Depakote on my own (500 mg daily for 6 months) because I didn't like it.
Horrors! Anxiety, insomnia, depression, memory loss. Depakote was never the right drug for me anyway, but the withdrawal symptoms were so severe that I would strongly suggest you taper slowly on a schedule recommended by your psychiatrist. Don't do it on your own.

As far as I know, there is no wash-out period when starting an MAOI with an AED like depakote. Like Gracie mentioned though, some people are particularly sensitive to stopping an AED- and you should never stop one suddenly since you risk convulsions. It really depends on what dose and how long you've been taking it in determining a tapering schedule, but again I think you can start an MAOI whenever- unless of course you are taking an SSRI (and please someone correct me if I'm wrong) take care, judy
