All I remember from my Remeron experience
was that after taking the dose, I could hear
things like my mother's voice, voices of friends,
family and other familliar sounds very clearly.

Note that Remeron is a 5-HT2A antagonist among other things. That probably happened to you for the same reason that 5-HT2A antagonists are efficacious at reducing auditory hallucinations in people with schizophrenia. Any sound that should be the center of your attention will basically be filtered more effectively by your brain.
