effexor and wellbutrin....Yikes!

Posted by bman on October 8, 2002, at 10:12:38

Well...here is the deal. I have been on effexor since about April of this year and have been taking 300mg. I like effexor and I was feeling great on it. However, I have the common side effect of delayed or not able to reach orgasm. So...I thought I would just taper of effexor all together...well I got down to 37.5mg a day, and I did that for about a week before stopping all together. Well...after stopping I had the common withdraw symptoms...felt like crap and all that....so I went back to 75mg a day, and felt normal the next day. Well...now I am on the 75mg of effexor and 150mg twice daily of wellbutrin. I guess the doc was thinking that the wellbutrin would counter act the effects of effexor. Well...now my problem is worse! Now I seem to have an impotence problem...something I have never had in my life...not even while on the full dose of effexor. Well...needless to say I don't know if I still have the problem reaching climax because I can't get to the point to try. Well...I am stopping the wellbutrin...I like my first problem better than the one I have now. So...my questions...are...Can I just stop wellburtin cold turkey after only taking it for about a week? Is impotence a common problem with the combination of effexor and wellbutrin? How long will it take for the wellburtin to be out of my system, where I will be back to the pre-wellbutrin state?

thanks!

It's probably better to quit Wellbutrin gradually if you do want to quit. But I don't know if you should. You are currently feeling good and stopping Wellbutrin might make you feel worse.

But on the other hand, if you quit Wellbutrin and go back up on your Effexor, I guess you would return to also feeling good but with no impotence.

It's perplexing because generally Wellbutrin has a positive or neutral effect on sex. It's not very common for WEllbutrin to have a neagative impact on sex. But it just goes to show that drugs affect people differently.

What has helped me with AD sexual wreckage is to take yohimbine about an hour before sex.

I felt fine before taking the wellbutrin...I only started to take it to counter act the negative effects of the effexor. Effexor was working...I was feeling good and I could maintain an erection fine...just had a difficult time reaching climax. Once I started the wellburtin...within about a weeks time I couldn't maintain an erection. I figure since I was only on the wellbutrin for a week or so...I shouldn't have any problems just dropping it. I haven't take one since yesterday morning...and so far no problems. My main question is how long before all of thi swellbutrin stuff is out of my system. I liked myself much better pre-wellbutrin.

thanks.

Wow, that is exactly what happened to me when I added Wellbutrin to Effexor! You are not alone. I was so screwed up that I went cold turkey. After one month off of both Effexor and Wellbutrin, my sexual response is normal again, but I still don't seem to have as much drive as before. I think you can get the Wellbutrin out of your system in about 2 weeks to a month.

OH MY GOSH!!!! Does effexor affect women the same as men? I thought something was wrong with me.. I have been taking effexor for almost a year now and in the past 8 months or so I have not been able to achieve an orgasm,no matter what we try.. I thought it was like maybe I was going through pre menapause or something until I read this post today.. Maybe its the effexor? I was on wellbutrin a couple of years ago and I didn't notice a difference in my sexual life.. Is this something common with effexor? like I am wondering why maybe the doctor didn't mention it to me especially when I have been complaining to her about having problems with sex.. hmm I go off and on of my meds all the time and I don't experience any withdrawls, I took wellbutrin for about 6 months then just stopped taking it, never had any ill effects, I play around with the effexor too, not on purpose just forget to take them mostly.. I didn't even realize there could be withdrawls, golly is my doctor educating me or what? :)

It's not the effexor that caused this with me...it was the wellbutrin.

yeah, I got it that the wellbutrin was what caused you to be unable to perform but from your first post it was the effexor that caused you not to be able to have an orgasm right? that was the part I was refering too.

I had the delayed orgasm or Paxil, Celexa, Effexor, and Effexor with Wellbutrin, and eventual anorgazmia just with the Effexor, and Effexor with Wellbutrin. It just got worse and worse over the seven months on ADs. I heard that Wellbutrin by itself is ok. On further research, and from experience, I know that they can all cause sexual side effects. It is because of the seretonin 5HT2 receptor site in the brain in turned on more. That causes loss of libido and increased body temperature, and some other effects. Some are more effected than others and dosing makes a difference. The effects continue for a while after stopping too. I've been off of all ADs for 5 weeks now and have orgasms and erections ok, but the orgasms are not so intense as they used to be. They used to knock me out for a few seconds (you know like the French word for orgasm "petite mort") but no more. The effects may happen on either sex.

I have to get off this crap altogether. I have stopped the wellbutrin after less than a week. But I still don't think I am back to where I was pre wellbutrin. Going to the Dr. Thursday...hopefully he can help. I am not sure what's worse being depressed or not performing well. Right now I think the sex would be more of a AD than the drugs. :)
