L..Rash is almost gone now. Scared to try it again

Posted by lawrence s. on October 2, 2002, at 22:37:11

Any suggestions. I got a rash 4 days after starting lamictal. Discontinued it and 4 days later the rash is almost gone. Should I start up again? Seemed like it was giving me some positive effects.

I don't know anything about Lamictal, BUT I am super-sensitive to meds (I have gone through upwards of 7 SSRI's with no success). I know that, for me, rashes mean big trouble. I am having a bad allergy reaction if I ever have a rash from a med! Again, I have no clue about Lamictal, so I don't know if that's a *normal* s/e. (Although to me, a rash wouldn't seem like an acceptable s/e) Good luck!

Hi there,

When I started Lamictal six weeks ago, I began by splitting off the tiniest segments of a 25mg pill- probably around 4mg or less, daily for one week, then a week at roughly double, and then simply halving the pill, amounting to 12.5mg (which has given great results so far).
It was so tempting to go higher sooner, but being sensitive to the tiniest amounts of all AD's and their side-effects, I'd learned my
lesson.
It was worth the painstaking titration in my case- you could try re-introducing lamictal in smaller doses, keeping a wary eye for signs of rash (this has worked in various trials apparently)- you can get it in 5mg, or even 2mg strengths too.
Good luck,

Col.

I started on Lamictal last spring. Initial dose was 25mg daily for 1 week, then up to 25mg twice a day. At this time I developed a diffuse rash on my trunk and arms. This eventually resolved. As of 3 weeks ago, I am on 100mg a day. I take 50 in am and 50 in pm. Last week I started to itch, but no visable rash is present. This is getting better too. This drug has done wonders for my bipolar. Many people on the boards are having very good results. I think you should hang in there and try again. Just titrate slower this time. You just have to be patient for a theraputic response. The chances of developing the severer form of SJS are very slim. Good Luck.

What I would suggest is that you wait until the rash is entirely gone and then titrate up extremely slowly. It's worth the extra time if the med really works for you!
