does anyone know if I can combine effexor(low dose) with desipramine? I am currently on 100mg
desipramine and as I am functional, I feel there is a residual depression and room for improvement. I know I could go up on the desipramine, but I feel I need to augment with something else. I was on effexor for about 5 months with success but too many side effects.
Any comments appreciated.

My comment doesn't reply specifically to your question...FYI anyway.
I have been taking 200mg/daily of Norpramin (nongeneric desipramine) mostly for good sleep and calming affect and have had great results. Initially I tried desipramine but soon switched to Norpramin because of the side affects; experienced no side affects with Norpramin. I am also taking 50mcg/daily of cytomel to help with fatigue...initially had good results but fatigue is back.
Before trying the cytomel, my doctor wanted me to try effexor...I had the prescription filled but never started taking them, remembering intolerable side affects when I attempted taking effexor years ago. So...I'm guessing that it is ok to take that combo (effexor & desipramine) since my doctor has prescribed the same for me. However, you must assume that my doctor is in his right mind.

HI Basil,
What side effects were you experienceing with Desipramine that made you switch to Norpramin?
I am really interested to hear. I didn't realize
there was that much difference. Thanks, Angel1

Hi Angell,
According to the pharmacist and the doctor there isn't a difference between the generic & the brand. However, my doctor has also said that some people just do better on the name brand??? All I know is that I experienced no anxiety or agitated feeling on norpramin and the positive aspects were definitely noticeable. I also did much better when I switched from imipramine to tofranil (brand) last year.
How are you doing on effexor? My doctor says effexor will help my fatigue. I am currently taking 200 mg/daily of norpramin and 50 mcg/daily of cytomel, which is also supposed to help with fatigue. I've been holding off on the effexor because I can't decide which is worse...this fatigue or the (expected) side affects of effexor.
This is the end of the thread.
