I am desperate for any new information I can get on Nardil. I have been off of it for 2 years and just started back on it a couple days ago. My life has not been the same since I stopped it, and none of the "new" drugs worked. I also take clonopin. I think I suffer from Atypical depression. The reason I went off of it was I had heard that it can eventually damage your kidneys, (and I have a horseshoe kidney.) Does anyone know if this is true? My doctor put me on it because she agreed the benefits outweigh the risks, and right now I am severely depressed, as much as I have ever been. Also, how fast can I increase the dose? She wanted me to take 15 mg. a day the first week and then 30 the second, etc. Why are doctors (at least in my neck of the woods) so afraid of this drug? This seems like a small dose and it might take a lot longer to start working. When I took it the last time I was taking at least 45mg a day and I got to a point where I could monitor my own dose and increase and decrease it when I needed to. I have had some bad experiences on Nardil in the past (not my doing, but doctor's for prescribing the wrong combinations, even after I told them what I was taking) And suggestions from anyone out there would be appreciated.

Metabolites of drugs are processed by the liver and excreted by the kidneys. If the kidneys are not working well, there may be a build up of the metabolites. Some drugs are contra-indicated with kidney disease and others are just a caution or warning that you may have to use a lower dose.
When you say newer antidepressants do you mean Effexor, Remeron, Ludiomil, and Wellbutrin?
Usually atypical gets treaded with MAOIs, but it's been suggested that SSRIs, SNRIs, etc, may work as well. Parnate (a MAOI) doesn't have such sexual side effects as Nardil.
There was a study that cognitive therapy was as effective as drugs in atypical depression.

The newest drug I was on was remeron, I gave it an honest try but I just couldn't stay awake on it. The only ones (including effexor) that didn't put me to sleep was wellbutrin. I started my own drug therapy a couple months ago. Took st.john's wort and licorice extract and valerian. I know it seems weird but I was desperate. It helped some but it seemed like they wore off too quick. Licorice supposedly has MAOI qualities but it can deplete your body of potassium. The new doctor I have doesn't seem to be concerned about my kidney, but there seems to be some controversy about it.
This is the end of the thread.
