I'm sorry about your breakup, it sounds like major depressive episode. Effexor XR is a good medication for some people for both anxiety and depression, and GAD. I have been taking it for about 12 weeks now and it does not space me out like Paxil did. The bad thing is anorgasmia. I'm looking into adding BuSpar for that or switching to Remeron. The withdrawal is bad. For example if I don't take my medication for two or three days, I get wierd nightmares, and a shock like effect in my arms and head upon changing my visual focus, and some dizziness. Because of the nightmares, I don't sleep except about 3 hours. But, usually you taper off 75 mg or 37.5 mg per week. When I dropped from 225 mg to 150 mg It worked fine, and I am now dropping from 150 mg to 75 mg to see if sexual side effects will abate any. It has worked well for the depression, I still feel sad, but I can function. Hope this helps some in making the decision.

Well, I was changing from Celexa to Effexor and I don't know what was withdrawal from Celexa and what was from Effexor. I did feel very strange for at least a week. It takes about 3-4 days for the concentration of medication to stabilize when titrating up or down. I had a rough time coming off of Paxil.

I had the same experience. Effexor
just intensified my prexisting
mood. Personally I would try Remeron
or celexa. Remeron did not work for me,
but I know it has helped many like you. What are your symptoms of depression,
if it is a persistantly sad mood
try an SSRI. Celexa 10 mg has helped
me get my life back together. It is not an
intoxicating feeling, and it lets you deal with
your emotion not just cover it up by
taking your mind away from it.I don't think docs know the differnce
between antidepressants enough.Linkadge

Everyone has side efefcts at first. If you bolt
and run with from AD after a few days you will never find one that works. Things get better after a few weeks but the true AD effect does not happen for 6 to 8 weeks.

Robin, Just hang in there, each day. I started at 37.5 mg XR Effexor per day and had some similar feelings as you, but after 4 or 5 days I was already feeling better. However the full adjustment to the new medicine took about a week.
Then when I increased from 37.5 to 75, I felt a little spacey as well for about a week. But it has all been worth it (I have been taking Effexor XR for about4 months now)and it has really stablized my overall mood and perception.
I used to agonize over everything. I felt like I had to right every wrong (Don Quixote syndrome)but now everything seems more in balance.
Stay with it!
Keep in touch here.
