My pdoc agreed w/ me that I shouldn't stay on this med if I don't need it, but he recommended I taper from 1mg to 1/2mg and I'm really scared this is too fast. I don't want brain damage, or TD or w/e. Does anyone have experience w/ risperdal? Is this too fast?

Sos,
I was on 4mg. of Risperdal last year. When it was time to come off, my pdoc reduced it first to 3mg., then 2mg,then 1mg.,then 1/2 mg. and then off completly. I had absolutley no problem coming off of it at all! I've had much worse withdrawal from the SSRI'S and benzo's.At least in my case, there was no difficulty at all coming off Riaperdal. Good luck with your tapering and I hope this helps you some.

P.S. By the way, we tapered this over about a 2 month period.

I had been on risperdal for over a year and I didn't think I needed it anymore. I stopped taking my meds and was fine for a while, but 2 and a half monthes after I went off risperdal (1.5 mg) I went into a psychotic episode. I'm through that time now, but wouldn't risk going off it again. When it happened my doctor said you really have to try going off it once though because everyone needs to know if it was a one time thing or if they have more long term mental illness. Remember that if you develop symptoms again it's not the end of the world you will get better again too.

Thank you as2000, but I went off of risperdal a while ago and have so far been doing ok.
