Phenobarbital question

Posted by geno on July 31, 2002, at 18:05:43

Hello, my new doc, has put me on phenobarbitol to wean me off alchol/xanax. I was drinking 6 beers a night, plus up to 1mg a day of xanax.
Im perscribed 60mg 4x a day for 5 days, then next week 30mg 4x a day, then 15mg a day for next. How much pheno is exqual to xanax, for example 30mg of phenobarb is how much xanax? Do they hit gaba? DOes one have better uses than the other. I took 60mg and feel ok, no xanax withdrawls. But sorta out of it/

You can die on a barbituate

Barbituates, when taken responsibily, shouldn't shut down the CNS to the point of losing its capacity to breathe and have gag reflexes.

When taken with alcohol, it is VERY likely that the combination WILL do this, ending in sudden death.

I know you are taking alcohol because it was the first thing you found to curb your anxiety. The moment I noticed I was self-medicating my anxiety with alcohol, I made an appt. with a p-doc. I even taken some alcohol while on Klonopin, because Klono will make me very chill but not want to talk. Alcohol makes me talkative, although I'm working on trying drugs that can do the same.

BARBITUATES are DIRTY drugs. By that I mean they aren't as selective in targeting a specific receptor, like the GABA, as with the benzos.

DO NOT THINK BECAUSE YOU GOT AWAY WITH ALCOHOL ON XANAX YOU'RE "TOUGH" ENOUGH TO DO IT ON BARBS!!! They are entirely different from one another, barbs and benzos do not in any way act the same.

It will kill you if you test fate.

HI,

Can't help with your dosage question, but I was wondering how well the phenobarbital was at controlling your anxiety? As good as the benzos?

Thanks

Dave

Dave, barbs aren't exactly the most attractive
thing around. Benzos replaced them, and as soon as they did, not many people stuck around with barbs.

Honestly, aside from Geno's reason for weaning off Xanax, I can't think of any reason why pharmacies would even the stock the things. Maybe some people prefer them, or something, or benzos don't work for them... although I've never heard of benzos not working for someone, I could be mistaken.

Dave, why are you curious? Are you having a problem with a benzo? Docs have never complained about benzos working, really, the probably is they work a little too good, and you end up wanting to stay on them. And then the worst side-effect about benzos is that you get Benzo Tolerance Controvery/Define what "tolerance" is/Any doctor who doesn't throw benzos at your face should lose his license Disorder, commonly referred to as "Message Board Inflammation."

Barbs are like ECT, if you don't mind me exaggerating with you for a second. You only go to them if you really, really need them and ran out of options. And by options, I mean you've got none. As in, none!

I was actually considering going into a study that required go off/reducing any anti-seizure medication. Since I have severe anxiety I was looking for something I could take as an alternative. The study only lasts a few weeks so I don't think being the phenobarbital for a short period would be a problem. I'll have to mention it to the P.I. in charge of the study.
But, thanks for your concern.

Dave

Phenobarbital is used as an anti-seizure medication,
so it would seem you could not take it, either.

I'm not so sure the barbituates are as strong an anti-seizure drug as benzos. When I did ECTS awhile ago, they gave a barbituate anesthesthia and still got good seizures. On the other hand they made you cut back on benzos before the treatments. But, your point is well taken. Also, I'd still like to know if a barbituate is a good anti-anxiety medicine. Other then the benzos, there really seems like nothing else for anxiety. (other than alcohol)
