Does Effexor increase anxiety/agitation?

Posted by rainbowlight on June 13, 2002, at 19:15:18

Does anyone know if Effexor increase anxiety? I know the insert said it causes jitters, etc. but I am experiencing agitation and high anxiety. (I have GAD, bipolar, OCD and ADD). Is this an initial side effect that goes away?

Effexor helped my anxiety. Give it a chance. I did have shakes, etc. like I feel when I have consumed too much caffeine, when I first started. I think it helped my anxiety better than my depression, actually.

Hi...

I hope you have started Effexor slow. I think this reaction not is uncommon with your different illness.

As far as OCD and ADD goes. You need high dosages Effexor to combat them ( 225 - 450 mg )
Are you bipolar II ? Whitch moodstabilizar do you use? The dosage must be sufficiant. Importend to first stable the mood, and than threat other symptom, like OCD and ADD.

Hi. I take 100 mgs. Lamictal, 30 mgs. of Remeron and a small dose of Risperdal. My mood is stabilized, now I am trying to treat the ADD, OCD and residual anxiety. I am bipolar II. I started the Effexor at 1/2 of a 37.5 mg. pill once a day. Called pdoc about the agitation, she told me to raise the dose to 37.5 mgs. once a day. Feels horrible to be honest, like way too much coffee, she said to give it a try.

Hi Rainbow, I can't tolerate more than 75mgs of effexor as at higher doses I become very irritable. To bad as I really like the responce I've received from it. I know I require another med to give me a slight energy boost and I'm still looking.Tried Remeron 15mgs with my effexor-4 week trial but stopped, too lathargic. I also take 0.5mgs of clonazepam which helps with the effexor irritability but I have an appointment next month with pdoc and will discuss other mood stabilizers to augment with. best wishes,Rick

Effexor increased my anxiety/agitation for about a month, then it started to calm me down. I have been on it for 3 years at 150mg. It has not lost its effectiveness yet.

HI,
I've never really had a problem with anxiety, but once I was on Effexor my anxiety level increased dramatically.
*If you decide to go off Effexor at any time, please do it slowly. It took me three months to wean off of it because of the flu-like side effects (I'm sure you've been reading all about Effexor's side effects!).
Good luck,
Sarah
