5-HTP causing rash

Posted by mist on June 17, 2002, at 0:46:55

I've taken 5-HTP on and off since December (more on than off although not a lot lately). It's helped at times and not at others. I'm concerned because I get a light rash on my face when I take it. It looks like the butterfly rash of lupus patients but as far as I know I don't have lupus and it only happens when I take the 5-HTP. Does anyone know if this indicates something serious and if I should not take the 5-HTP anymore because of it? I might stop anyway because of the way it looks but it's not necessarily that noticable -- from a distance it could appear to be a sunburn but up close it's obviously a rash.

The negative effects listed was non-galvanic rash syndrome (I have no idea whether that is similar to a lupus rash). That's all I could see under skin reactions. Take care, judy

Thanks! I did a search on non-galvanic rash syndrome and didn't come up with anything. Wonder what it means.

The lupus rash appears across the nose and cheeks. Mine is the same shape and covers the same areas but is lighter than the rashes I've seen in pictures of lupus patients.
