Zoloft to Celexa... Is this going to work?

Posted by josiejo on April 10, 2002, at 11:56:59

Hey all...
I've been taking 100mg of zoloft daily for not quite 3 years. I was never quite sure if it was the right drug for me. I took myself off it a few times previously with no success. I went back to the terrible feelings I'd had before. Well, 2 weeks ago, I did it again. Today I saw my new doc. (I finally quit my old one after hearing for like the 1000th time to quit smoking... like I didn't know it was bad...) Anway.. the new doc is having me try Celexa. She is having me try 20mg for 2 weeks then go back to see her. She says it doesn't have all the side effects that Zoloft has. I sure wish someone would have suggested this BEFORE I gained 30 pounds! So, today is the first day of Celexa. I'm still waiting for a miracle. I keep forgetting I've been 2 weeks without any meds and anything and everything including stupid commercials makes me break down in tears. I even started bawling in the doc's office when I was telling her about my allergies.
If anyone has any success stories, words of wisdom or just comments of their own, I'd love to hear. Until then, I'll be here, wiping my eyes and sniffling waiting until the new meds kick in.
Thanks!

I gained nearly 40 lbs on ADs (including different trials of Zoloft, Celexa, Prozac, Paxil, etc). Frankly for me, they were all very similar in their treatment of depression and in their side effect panel. I gained weight with each one, and I found no difference between Zoloft and Celexa. However, you may different.. I hope this change works well for you.
I did lose about 3 pounds when I started prozac, but it was only because I was nauseous. Once that wore off, my ravenous appetite returned with a vengeance.
You may want to ask your doc to aumgment with something like a stimulant (I take Adderall), or maybe Wellbutrin.
Good luck.

How is it going? I just started celexa last night after being on zoloft for 8 years. All ad's are not the same and we all respond differently to each- so we never know what to expect. i hope all is going well for you.

Hildi and JosieJo:
I will let you know. Started Celexa about 6 weeks ago after taking Zoloft for 7 years. Thought it was time for a change. Actually, not many side effects on Zoloft and am more depressed on Celexa but probably the dose is not high enough yet, so will be doing increases. Also, take Risperdal for mood stablizer, also helps me sleep at night.

Will stay with this for 3 or 4 months and if no change will try something else or go back on Zoloft.

Thanks for your opinions.
I've been on Celexa for about 2 months now. I haven't gained any more weight, so I guess that's a good thing. Unfortunately, I have developed severe apathy. I just plain don't care about much of anything.

As far as your dosage of Celexa, I started at 20mg and after about 2 or 3 weeks, I was still bursting into tears at the drop of a hat. Not something that people look for in their boss at work! My doc put me up to 40mg and I don't cry all the time anymore, but I don't care. (Isn't that a sad thing?) In a way, I have been able to share my experiences with depression with some of my subordinates, and try to point people towards our Employee Assistance Program, and with other people, I just keep my mouth shut and nod a lot.

Good luck and thanks again!

I really didn't have too bad of side effects on zoloft so maybe I'll go back on it. I know it's been only a few days on the celexa (after 8 yrs on zoloft) but I am jittery, anxious. When I switched from prozac to zoloft years ago I could feel zoloft working right away- in a good way. Now, all I feel is jittery, my depression is still here but i am able to function. And it has helped with my severe anxiety. I'm going to give celexa only a little while longer, and if I don't see an improvement soon I'm going back on zoloft.
