Excessive sweating and hot flushes

Posted by ro on June 6, 2002, at 10:54:42

I have taken a number of ssri's and each one has caused sweating, especially in the palms of the hands.
My doctor thus prescribed Mirtazapine and after this, moclobemide - neither of which worked. I have just begun to take Serzone.
I am terified that the feeling of warmth and sweating is permenant as i still experienced it in the wash out period (drug free) which lasted 2 weeks. Could anyone please reply to inform me if they have had a similar experience and if they noticed these side effects after discontinuing the treatment.
It is making me so depressed as it interferes with my guitar playing which i (used to) love. I would be so grateful to recieve any information that might enlighten me.

I have some bad news. I used prozac for 20 months, and stopped taking it one year ago. I had terrible sweating while on it, and that continued since now. I am noticing that the sweating is going away, but approximately one year after stopping prozac.
In the meantime, I would recommend antiperspirants.

Even though I felt very warm in hot weather, I never sweated much. But after taking SSRIs, I started to sweat easily. I also felt warmer - too warm most times. For me, it was an improvement as before I used to be too cold except in midsummer. But now, I can't tolerate hot weather at all. I dress very lightly for the weather & when I have no choice, sweat lots.

Yes, I use antiperspirants but sweat running down your back & chest when you work isn't much fun. I don't get hot flashes though, just very warm very easily. But it beats shivering & getting cold so easy. As for sweaty palms, frequent handwashing & dusting with talcum powder?

hyperhidrosis is the technical name for increased sweating. increased sympathetic drive, i think? i don't know much about it but i think there are separate drugs for it although its apparently sometimes hard to treat.

There is no specific drug to address hyperhidrosis. Beta blockers and anticholinergics are sometimes used. I tried pindolol (a beta blocker) and bornaprine (an anticholinergic), both at very small doses, and even so, I experienced confusion and memory problems.
Another anticholinergic, ditropan is told to have mostly peripheral and less CNS effects, but I never used it.

Sweating is better than dementia, so I will never put those kinds of medication in my body again!!

Hi-

I had such bad sweating after awhile on Zoloft that I thought that I was having urinary incontinence, and went through a whole work-up for that. I was a sticky mess and hated it, but none of my doctors mentioned any connection with the Zoloft. Finally I deciphered all the lingo in the manufacturers' inserts on all the meds that I was taking and figured out that it could be the Zoloft.

My sweating problem went away with the Zoloft and didn't linger. I did a very slow decrease to get off the Z. and don't know if that helped. Zoloft wasn't really a good med for me in the long run anyway.

I hope that your's ends soon- it is really miserable.

I had the same problem on effexor. Drove me absolutely nuts since before I was always cold and rarely would sweat even in hot weather. I had hot flashes also - especially when stressed. I went off the effexor about a month ago and the problem seems to have disappeared. I'm back to my always cold self.

I am on Effexor 150mg per day. I sweat a lot while excercising or working hard, and I mean a lot. I have to have a lot of water when I excercise. I have always known it was the ADs, because it started after I started taking them 20 years ago. Actually, I think it is good to sweat - why else would people build saunas. I am in great shape - good blood pressure, good colesteral numbers. I work out about an hour a day at the YMCA, and after I am done it looks like someone poored a bucket of water on me. Also deodorant is a must. So I look at it as curious side effect, but no big deal.

Hi,

Just found this wonderful site. I am hoping to hear from folks who have had the problem with sweating and switched to an SSRI that did NOT produce that side effect. I am being switched from Zoloft to Lexapro in the hope of losing that side effect (and others), but having just read the package insert, I am not so optimistic. Anyone have any good news in this area? Thanks,

Sadie

Sadie (or anyone else), did the Lexapro cause less sweating? I'm just trying to switch from effexor because of the sweating but after 2 days on lexapro am wanting to go back to effexor.

Thanks!

Lex caused me to sweat at first quite a lot, but now it's less sweat and less often. For me it's a minor inconvenience.

yeah i think all those ssris and stuff like that initially cause sweating cos theyre speeding up your whole cns, similarly they might cause teeth clenching and a general feeling like youre off your chops on e.

I have started taking Strattera about a month ago and I can't seem to kick the feeling like I am burning up. Sometimes I feel normal and then all of the sudden I will feel extremely hot and I will begin sweating with drips especially coming off of my scalp. Has anybody else had this problem on Strattera?
I have taken Prozac and Buspar for years, but have never had such an uncomfortable sweat problem like this except for the time I was on birth control a long time ago. I am only 33 years old. I shouldn't be having hot flashed yet!
Please give me feedback!!!

Are you taking Strattera in addition to your Prozac and Buspar? How much of what?

I am taking 60 mgs. of Prozac
30 mgs. of Buspar, (15 mgs twice daily)
and 80 mgs. of Strattera in the evening

You know, I've been on Strat for about 3 months, and lately I've been getting hot, too. I'm also taking Effexor XR 150mg. I hadn't thought of either of these being the cause until I went to turn on the air conditioner in a classroom, and the students asked me not too.
