dividing dosages of capsule?

Posted by Bob on June 12, 2002, at 15:14:48

I am taking Neurontin 100mg t.i.d. I am VERY hypersensitive to some meds, and this is one of them. I believe that I can derive some benefit from continuing Neurontin, but I want to decrease the dose. The problem arises with the necessity of dosing 3x/day due to the short half-life. Does anyone have experience with what to do when you want to divide or split a single capsule dose? I've thought about taking the capsules apart and using a razor blade to divide the powder, and then putting it back in. The problems with this would seem to be accuracy (how does one properly measure out the dose?), and having to throw away the remaining portions, since I don't have extra capsules.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

First, ask your pdoc for advice.

You'll probably have to open the capsule, divide the dose, and take half with juice or water. (You don't have to swallow the capsule unless you really want the gelatin...) Hold the other half aside for the next dose. Convenient? No, it's a pain in the a**.

You can try to get as even a split as possible by using a razor blade and a mirror. Cut the capsule in half using the blade (one cut, straight through) and separate the halves before lifting the blade. Just be sure to tell your family what you're doing before they assume that you're experimenting with a different drug! ;)

Good luck...

Actually you can purchase empty capsules and then proceeed with dividing (the last poster's advice was as good as any) and fill the empty capsule. I have a really good relationship with my pharmacist and he has done these types of things for me in the past- I don't know if you know yours as well. Another suggestion is maybe trying to catch Cam W.'s attention- he is a pharmacist. Take care, Judy

Find a Local Compounding Pharmacy.

They can accurately, conveniently make any strength capsule you want.
