Hi,
Prozac has been wonderful apart from the seriously bad side effect of reduced (non existant) sexual desire and very weak orgasm. I have dealt with this pretty well, for a long time I have been happy to be happy and thus not bothered by this side effect, until now. Its taking its toll on my relationship, even though my boyfriend is very understanding. I just want to have sex again !! I'm 22 not 102 !!!
I've tried Wellbutrin, this didn't work, infact it made me paranoid and depressed. What else can I try? Are there any really good herbal remedies ?
What is there ? Should I just stop taking Prozac? Please help,
Thanks Jane

Hi Jane,
We all understand your frustration! With herbal remedies you could try yohimbe or yohimbe + ginko biloba, but I would urge you not to experiment on your own. You should suggest these herbs to your psydoc and take it from there. Yohimbe was the best herb for sex in my opinion, however, it's also stimulating and so you may not be able to sleep and it can increase blood pressure and pulse and make you urinate every five minutes... My psydoc has used viagra very successfully with women. Adding an atypical anti-psychotic, remeron, or serzone is another option. You could also try adding a stimulant or a dopamine agonist. Using ginkgo biloba long term at a high dose may also be effective. Unfortunately, drug holidays won't work with prozac but maybe you could switch to a different SSRI and try drug holidays then. You figure one of these, or who knows, maybe even a combination of these like viagra + ginkgo will be effective. There was a recent letter to the editor in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry about using Claritin for Prozac induced sexual dysfunction so you may even want to try that.
Good Luck,

I read in a study that patients using SSRI's got remission of the sexual side effects by using 120 mg twice daily of Ginko Biloba. It was a 50:1 extract. The results were achieved in two months. Hope this helps.

Jane, I would be careful with the Ginko. It is known to cause nasty anxiety in people, and even at a small dose, I had an almost psychotic reaction. I have tried it a number of times again, with the same reaction. It was like I had drank 20 cups of coffee...and it also just left me all 'spaced' out.Talk to your doc about it..
Best wishes..
Jay

Hi,
I had the same experience with Ginko. Personally, I love the trees, but ginko spacess me out. We need to start a link with side effects from "natural" supplements that people have come across. I felt spaced out or anxious on sam-e too. I wonder what this means?? Remeron made me spaced as well so I wonder if they are all affecting the same area or chemicals in my brain. Selenium wasn't any good for me either. But, fish oil, omega 3's, seem to calm me some. Just started so hard to tell what the effect will be in the long run. Take care and CHECK with your doctor and if he says it is ok, start with a low dose. With ginko and sam-e a very low dose told me whether it would help or not.

Hi,
Thanks for the advice everyone, I have begun taking 80mg three times a day. The weird thing is that I actually feel sharper mentally. I guess it must be stimulating in some way.
I'd like to know how long it will take before it helps with my sexual problems ?

Hi Jane,
I would guess everyone is different, but here are a couple of links that may be encouraging. The first is to a study from 1998 and one of the things noted was how successful ginkgo was for the women. The other link is about an earlier report of ginkgo for this use and treated people for 4 weeks:

What is the percentage of extract in ginko extract tablets.
I have in Poland a drug that has 24%ginkoflavonoglikozid an 6% laktons terpen ( I do not know how it is in English)- is it OK for treatment.
Should I take 240 mg of it??
Please help.
