PRICING OF RITALIN,DEX.,AND ADDERRALL:WHAT,S UP?

Posted by Festus on June 1, 2002, at 14:20:53

Howdy Ya,ll !!
I was lookin at some of the posts of late and ran across several that spoke of going from Ritalin meds to the "cheap Adderrall and Dexedrine".They recently came out with generic Adderrall and it was over $100.00 for a month,s supply(3x10mg) and the Dex and Ritalin were under half that price.I called several places and found that Adderrall was very expensive.I,d like to know where these folks found "cheap Adderrall"!!
Thanks for feedback! Festus

You can find all the prices for these drugs if you have a calculator at Walgreens.com. Click on Pharmacy & then Drug Info/Prices & then search for the drug in question.

Adderall= $1.80/tablet
Generic Adderall-["D-amphetamine Combo"
10 mg tabs (Barr Labs)]= $1.33/tablet

Dexedrine 5 mg= $0.54/tablet
Dextrostat 10 mg= $0.54/tablet
Generic Dextroamphetamine 10 mg= $0.45/tablet.

Ritalin 10 mg= $0.69/tablet
20 mg= $0.95/tablet
Avoid generic Ritalin (methylphenidate, methylin, metadate)!- Even though they are cheaper they are not worth it. Ritalin generics last 1/2 an hour less than brand-name Ritalin.

Dexedrine is much cheaper than Adderall, & is usually considered stronger for CNS/mental stimulation & with less anxiety but it doesn't last as long (4-5 hrs for dex vs. 6 for Adderall).

One problem with brand-name Dexedrine is that they only make it in 5 mg tablets so if you take a high dose, brand name Dexedrine is too much of a hassle/expense. So you have to take either
'generic Dexedrine (Dextroamphetamine) 10 mg tablets [Barr labs]'
or the sort of a "name brand" 'Dextrostat 10 mg tablets [Shire Pharmaceuticals]'.

Personally, I take 40 mg of {Dexedrine/Dextrostat/Dextroamphetamine) a day prescribed as "120 10 mg Dextrostat tablets" per month. Dextrostat seems to work pretty well, & is made by the makers of Adderall {Shire} so i'm assuming the quality control is good. The best thing about Dextrostat is that the 10 mg pills at 54 cents/tablet are only a few cents more than the generic but half the price of (2) Dexedrine tablets.

So with Dextrostat I only have to take 4 10 mg tablets/day, while with Dexedrine being only available in 5 mg tablets I would have to take 8 tablets a day of it! (240/month- and NO Doctor/Psychiatrist is going to write you a scrip for 240 schedule II Dexedrine 5 mg (d-amphetamine) pills because the DEA monitors these prescriptions for any excessive amount/dosage/# of units.

##################3-BEERS-I found Adderall IR sometimes lasted b/t 7-8 hrs. for me, but I've read (Here) that this effect cd. could be related to taking high initial dosage in a.m. (40mgs)

######################### VERY interesting, 3-B.
I can make use of that info.

#########Don't u think DEA, wd. have the brains to assess distribution and sales by total *mg. quantity* rather than , rather than, 'duh , how many little pills are you pushin'? Maybe, maybe not. I guess sheer quantities wd. catch their attention first.

A LITTLE MORE:

Festus & 3B----------
no way, no how is Adderall gen. or otherwise gonna be cheap right now. I think it just surpassed Ritalin in % of an ADD drug prescribed for(and sold for) AD/HD. And I'm sure the Adderall folks are kicking up there heels. To me, it is a drug far superior to ritalin, & even the IR version often lasts up to 7-8 hours for me. Haven't tried XR yet or the add. generic.

I tried a generic form of IR dexedrine that didn't do much for mr, except give me an itchy, invisible, but slightly bumpy rash on my cheeks & jawbone.

I am now on 2 10 mg. Dexedrine timed-release spansules (brand) 3 times a day.I believe it (dex spansules) now has a generic as well, but, I hate wasting my money on something that might not work.I was not dx'd until age my 40's (6 mos. ago) and I try not to spend any time pondering what my life "could've been" w/proper therapy if I had been treated from around 10 yrs. old. So, I really begrudge the time I have spent in futile drug trials. I'm just glad (make that joyfully ecstatic) that I can begin to decipher my very inconsistent, somewhat checkered past. Some of my guilt, depression, withdrawal, etc, is dissipating, little by little.

I'll probably try generic spansules at some point anyway, even tho I hated gen dex-IR, but tolerate Dexstrostat much better. My pdoc allows me 30 Dexstro's a month to help me get out of bed when I simply CANNOT, or go on for a couple more hrs. my 5 yr. old's bedtime. This is a necessity for her life and mine, b/c my husband is in the restaurant bus. and works late hrs.

And he has, w/o hesitation, written me scripts for 180 20mg Adderall IR (120 mgs. daily) along w/300 mgs. Effexor daily, 2 mgs. clonazepam daily prn & propanolol 40 to 120 mgs. daily prn. Same with my current regimen, just sub 180 Dex spansules and add on the break-thru Dextrostat. 30 at 5mgs.

Good luck to both of u and thanks for the helpful calculation site, 3-Beers!

Dexedrine Spansule blood levels too low » nightlight

I would try to ditch the Dexedrine Spansules and replace them with Dextrostat 10 mg pills 2 to 3x per day. In the prescribing information on their website or in the PDR, they give the blood levels of d-amphetamine (ng/mL) & the IR Dextrostat/Dexedrine are MUCH higher than the Dexedrine Spansules & also MUCH higher than an equal dose of Adderall IR or XR. The Dexedrine Spansules also have a reputation of being erratic.

The D (dextoxatory) isomer of amphetamine is 3 to 4 times more potent for CNS stimulation than the l-isomer. The l-isomer mostly just gives the negative peripheral side effects (1 to 2 more times potent) associated with amphetamines such as increased breathing, heart rate. racemic d,l amphetamine (Benzedrine) was subject to much more abuse back in the late 1960s than Dexedrine ever was. Interestingly enough, Benzedrine is one of the 4 ingredients of Adderall. Dexedrine/Dextrostat only contains the "good" d-isomer.

After reading extensively about the pharmacology of amphetamines Dexedrine/Dextrostat is the clear winner for selective CNS stimulation & on paper is better than Adderall for ADD. I personally think the only redeeming quality about Adderall is that is lasts longer & is available in a wide range of doses, otherwise it just causes more anxiety with less mental stimulation/focus & more anorexia/weight loss (it is really just a discontinued amphetamine diet pill named Obetrol, that they bought & renamed ADDerall).

Dexedrine really screwed up by not offering a wide range of doses. The fact that they only offer a 5 mg pill is absolutely ridiculous. Dexedrine used to be number two to Ritalin, but dropped like a rock after Adderall came out- SmithKline Beecham lost millions cause some moron scientist in charge there didn't come up with 10, 15 & 20 mg tablets, which would have kept it competitive with Adderall.

I was quite surprised when I went to the pharmacists to pick up my Adderall (10mg x 60). It appears as though my insurance picked up most of the tab - my share came out to a measly $5.00.

What kinda insurance do you have? I have Blue Cross.
