Hello. I am currently taking zyprexa and I have a question. Does taking Zyprexa in an of itself cause the weight gain, or does it just cause an increase in your apetite causing you to eat more therefore causing the weight gain? I take it for its calming effect, is there something else Which could be substituted for it to help with inner agitation/racing thoughts? Thanks for your help. Teddy

Teddy, The Zyprexa in and of itself causing weight gain by changing the metabolism. It does cause carbohydrate cravings, however, I gained 17 lbs. on Zyprexa eating less than I did one year ago. For agitation, Klonopin (a benzo) or Buspar are both good. Good luck. Mimi

I do remember reading from somebody here that she fought the incresead appetite very hard and didn't gain weight on zyprexa.

I read someone on this board who described herself as "always a thin person" who gained plenty weight on Zyprexa. I have used it very sparingly, at tiny dose, on an as needed basis. It has helped me when I've gotten into a particular kind of agitated, obsessively angry state (one clue is that I start ruminating on how my sister has wronged me!)
But I'm finding that adding a little extra as needed to my regular dose of Neurontin cools me down just as fast.

Zyprexa is well-known for causing weight gain.An antipsychotic that is less likely to do that is Risperidone but it might not suit you.

I must say that I've consistently read, heard and personally experienced one thing with Zyprexa and weight gain - decrease the carbs and go with higher protein diet, such as the Zone diet, Atkins or others.
In fact, Dr. Daniel Amen who's Mr. ADHD expert strongly suggests a "higher protein diet along with a lot of veggies..." quoting from two of his books and website.
Personally I don't much care for all the BS that comes with calorie counting via the Zone diet or Atkins. However, simply boosting my lean meat, nuts and good sources of protein, plus adding more salads and veggies have prevented me from gaining the weight I initially gained BEFORE I came across this information.
