ATIVAN PROBLEM

Posted by adamie on May 28, 2002, at 21:22:26

could it be that i am feeling worse this recent week due to my low ativan dose not being high enough? i take .5mg 3 times a day. because i have developed dependance and need more?? because i certainly dont feel noticable effects after i take each ativan. when i took ativan long time ago... when first starting out it made me slightly less suicidal. it would be good to be off it since it creates dependance. once i was off it because i ran out and doctor was gone. 2 days without it... jesus christ i became suicidal. so much mind torture. although if this med trully helps which now i dont it does much if at all then i wouldn't mind being on it the rest of my life. but this tiny dose is crap. i dunno what the hell is going on. a few months ago my dep and anxiety were less severe i guess due to meds then it went downhill again. i was on ativan and risperdal and immovane. then as time went by it all turned bad.

does anyone here know a lot about ativan and other benzies and can give me some insight.......;,;.;.;,

i hesitate to reply because i feel little informed. others here know lots more about this. i took ativan for a while on a daily basis and i really liked it. but if i missed a dose i got pretty crabby to say the least. by your saying that you don't feel like it's working do you mean that you are getting crabbier while maintaining your current dose, or do you mean that you no longer feel the "kick" when you take it (because that sensation wears off even though it is still working... that is, after a while you don't ever feel the "kick" but it still does what it's supposed to do.)

do you have a doc that you can ask if you need to up your dose? i know my pdoc told me something really helpful when i inquired how i was supposed to know when i was at the right dosage, and he told me that if it's relieving symptoms then you are close if not right on. if i started to feel like it was putting me to sleep, then i probably was getting too much. i have found that to be true for my experience.

i am now using xanax, but that's just because i responded better to it.

hope something in this was helpful. probably others will reply who know more. sorry things are turning down right now. hope you get the answers you need soon.

Please read:

You are on a very low dose of ativan. One generally takes between 1 - 10 mg's a day depending on their present condition. Anxiety fluctuates so staying at a steady dose doesn't always make sense. Anxiety and accompanying hoplessness and suicide ideation associated with the relentless nature of chronic anxiety symptoms put you at high risk if you are not given high enough doses to control the anxiety. Anxiety causes depression. If you still have depression after upping ativan for awhile, notify your doc and see if upping the ativan dose, another BZD, or augmenting with an AD would help.

Good luck,

Alan.
