Lamictal-how long has it been in use?

Posted by Bekka H. on April 26, 2002, at 23:09:24

Does anyone know how many years Lamictal has been in use? Although it is now being used for depression and bipolar states, it is an anticonvulsant and was used as an anticonvulsant before being used for affective disorders. I am interested to know how long it has been "on the market."

Thanks.
Bekka

Lamotrigine, at least in U.K.

In 1991, Lamotrigine was licensed in the U.K. for use as adjunctive therapy in refractory partial epilepsy after short-term clinical trials established its effectiveness. Systematic postmarketing surveillance of Anti-Epileptic Drugs is generally lacking. However, large-scale postmarketing surveillance was conducted to assess the safety of LTG by the Drug Safety Research Unit in Southampton.

It definitely hasn`t been in use long enough to go generic-it would cost me $14.00 a day if my insurance didn`t cover it! I think drug companies should be required to have money back guarantees. Cecilia
