Is it safe to combine SAM-e with an irreversible MAOI like isocarboxazid?

TSA,I do not know the answer to this question. SLS asked the same question a month or so ago. Perhaps he found an answer. All I can say is that I have never seen any warnings against it, and it seems that I would have if it were known to be countraindicated. The only warning in the package insert is that bipolars should not take SAM-e unless under pdoc care (i.e. patient must be on an adequate amount of a mood stabilizer) otherwise it may induce mania.

In Richard Brown's book on SAM-e he said that he used SAM-e on his patients with most AD's but not with MAOI's. He said that he did not know if it was safe or not.

I've seen this a few places -- that SAM-e and MAOI's are contraindicated because of uncertain safety. Is this just typical MAOI interaction hysteria? Would anyone care to speculate why this combination might be dangerous?

On the text enclosed into the Samyr box (SAm-E) under the voice "INTERACTION" we can read:
"Sam-e is compatible with every other antidepressant med, in particular TCA and Monoamminoossidase inhibitors (maoi).
Sam-e hasn't negative interactions if used with alchool"

It is safe to use Sam-e with a partial or full MAOI. I have Richard Brown's book and tracked down the co-author (Teororo Bottiglieri). He's a pharmacologist who actually wrote his dissertation on sam-e years ago. Anyway, he told me there was no problem with taking nardil with sam-e, and I don't remember his explanation of why it didn't say so in his book.
Anyway, Bottiglieri told me to call Richard Brown; and that he would also put in a call to him. And Dr. Brown called me back and confirmed that MAOIs and SAM-e
were fine together. He ended up speaking with me for almost an hour; going over a protocol for adding sam-e, then talking about other possibilities to add to Nardil if Sam-e didn't work. He was very big on lamictal as an augmentor. He told me to go as high as 1600mg on SAM-E before I gave up. Unfortunately it didn't work for me.
If you're going to try it, "Stop Depression Now" is a good book for information about sam-e, although you can probably get the information from the internet. There was also a bulletin board about sam-e that was helpful, but I don't know after over two years if it's still operating. You might want to do a google search.Good luck,
Shelli
