I'm on the verge of switching to effexor from celexa. My doc wasn't the most encouraging because of all the side effects but i am on the highest does celexa and i still feel like i want to jump off a cliff. i had done some research and it sounded like it would be worth a try but i feel like there are so many horror stories. i am so sick of being so depressed i feel like i have to do something other than hide from the world. but now i'm scared that i'm treating my body like a guinea pig. are there any success stories about effexor? is it worth a try? help! r.

In reply to switching to Effexor...should i have hope or fear?, posted by renelso1 on April 19, 2002, at 10:22:19
Go for it. A LOT of people have great results. I did, for a while. Withdrawal can be very bad, or it can be a piece of cake. Very slooooowww tapering is important.
If you've given it a fair trial, and what you're using now doesn't work, it only makes sense to try something else.
I am seriously thinking of trying one of the older MAOI's. Maybe Parnate.
Love and luck,
Carly

It is worth a try. Effexor XR was the BEST AD I have been on and I have been on a lot. When I first started it it was like a miracle - Not only had I not felt that good in years, I had forgotten that it was POSSIBLE to feel that good. Unfortunatly it had one side effect for me as well - It totally killed my sex life. Abilty, arousal, you name it. (My response to an AD seems directly proprtional to how bad it screws me up sexually)That isn't very important when your depression makes you non-functional, but as you get better it becomes more and more important. My main goal in life right now is to find an AD or combination that works as well as Effexor without the sexual side effects.
Anyway, everyone is different - not all have the same side effects as others, etc. Give it a try under supervision, follow the directions to gradually increase the dose up to therraputic levels, and if you find it isnt for you, be careful as take your time weaning yourself off of it. Good luck to you.

well now i certainly have some hope, i can't even remember the last time i felt good without having to strenuously work at it. i also can't remember the last time i slept through the night. one of my problems with celexa is the what i like to call "crack-baby dreams." crazy event after event i would remember in perfect detail and feel completly unrested. similar problems here? another question i am wondering about is time of day. i have always taken ADs in the morning so i'll have the best chance of remembering...but i wonder if that contributes to my never-ending state of tiredness...
