Neurontin dosage?

Posted by Kelty on April 17, 2002, at 0:45:38

My GP has agreed to let me try trazodone 150 mg at night and add neurontin. He was unsure about an appropriate dose of neurontin though. He gave me 400 mg pills and told me to try starting at one or two a day. Does this seem appropriate? (I am trying it to treat anxiety, fibromyalgia and for migraine prophylaxis.)

That sounds fairly typical to me for people starting out on it. Some are sensitive to sedation and can't handle that dosage during the day however. But, you are on 150mg of traz. at nite, so I don't think you are amongst that bunch. The only thing about Neurontin is the real short half-life. If you can tolerate it and you want the effects to be as even as practicable you might need to take it about four times a day. Perhaps 300mg caps 4x daily? More than that and I "blank out" and can't function. But, there are others that can handle a LOT with no problem-make sure you got plenty of $$$ to pay for the Neurontin, though. If you are trying prevent migraines-Depakote might be better and you might get away with once at bedtime dosage. I think the PDR mentions 500mg/day as a max dose for migraines-any more doesn't seem to help.

I take 400 mg. three times a day and have no trouble with sedation. I'm a very nervous/anxious bipolar II so it doesn't bother me a bit.

Good luck to you.

two 400mg neurontin pills would not seem to me to be sufficient. neurontin has a half-life of about 6 hours. 1200mg separated into 3 divided doses may be better or even 1600mg into 4 divided doses.

Hey Kelty --

It's been a while, but how did the Neurontin help your migraines?

I take Neurontin 800mg twice a day for social anxiety. It helps me a great deal.

I take 400 mg. four times a day and do have a little trouble with sedation. I'm a very anxious and believed to be bipolar. It works better than the antidepresents I have tried.

What is the differances between bipolar and bipolar II?
