I feel embarrassed about asking this question, but I am quite concerned about this experience. I am a 37 year old female and relatively healthy, except for Hereditary Hemochromatosis, but I am de-ironed and except for the anxiety/depression, feeling okay. My husband and I had sex the other day and I experienced for the first time ever,coidal bleeding. I am going to my doctor for a physical just to be on the safe side. This has never happened to me before, and I am hoping this is some sort of weird side-effect of Celexa. Is this common with anti-depressants?

Hi Jaynee,
I'm NOT Dr. Kramer, but until he logs on, I'd like to put my two cents in.
First, I think you should definitely see your gynecologist about ANY irregular bleeding, just to be on the safe side.
Second, when I was on Celexa, I had a lot of menstrual irregularities, which began shortly after I started the med, stopped when I stopped the med, and resumed when I resumed the med. Most of the irregularities I had manifested as inter-menstrual bleeding, persistent spotting, etc. I was tired all the time on Celexa. I think most of that was just from Celexa, but it could have also been from all that blood loss.
When I went to my gynecologist, he did a pap test and also sent me for a TVD (trans-vaginal Doppler ultrasound). The TVD was repeated several times to check for the thickness of the uterine lining. The advantage of the Doppler over the regular ultrasound is that it shows areas of increased blood flow.

I've never heard of this specifically being due to AD's, but sometimes they can cause some bleeding problems, which usually present with bruises or bleeding gums. It's a good idea to get checked out by your doc to make sure.

Hi Bekka, are you still on celexa and what dose are you on. I haven't had any period problems with celexa. Just that weird bleeding thing with sex that one time. When I first started the celexa I was also taking Motilium for my stomach and that definitely caused me to almost hemorrhage. Once I stopped the motilium I had no problems. So I knew it wasn't the celexa, but the motilium causing the problem. I will go to the doctor this week and get things checked out, because of that one experience, that I am sure was due to celexa. I had read where certain anti-depressants can cause or are suspected to increase the chances of breast cancer. I think they might have a valid point, since it seems to screw with so many peoples hormones. But what's the option? Dying from breast cancer later in life or putting a gun to my head now!!! I think I will just continue to take my celexa, since it seems to help. My doc says I should expect to stay on Celexa for 2 years. I just don't know if I should stay on it that long. I guess I should ask that question in another thread.
