Doc gave 100mg of neurontin ONE to be taken daily.
Having half-life of 6-9 hours surely I should take it 3 times daily .
Has my doc got it wrong again or is this dose normal when starting .many thanks.

I've heard of people taking it once a day. The main problem is that the medicine can be "bumpy" going up/down in your system. But at the really low dose it may not be as big an issue. It may be common for doctors to start once a day dosing just to start titrating into the medicine (my pdoc did this). At the higher doses (I took 300 mg 3x a day), I believe convention is to dose 3x a day to try to keep the medicine circulating in the body at a steady state. This helps to prevent mood fluctuations from changes in blood levels.

For some reason, that little factlet about Neurontin's half-life is not exactly correct. I took all mine before bed, at pdoc's suggestion, and it sure as hell lasted more than six hours. . .more like twenty-four!

Maybe he gave just enough to maintain some kind of stabilization....my doc is really in the dark over meds especially the anti-convulsants{sp?} he's old-ishI see him again in 2 weeks and he usually asks if I have any research!
6 times a day...no wonder he gently recommended something else that would be VERY EXPENSIVE!

... just to let you know, Dreamer & Kelly -
I am still on 600 mg per day, 6 times a day. Have you any idea how hard this is to remember to take, for someone whose memory is shot to hell by this very med? Arrrhhhg. But the moods are kept calm, so I'm not a screaming, angry person like I am when I forget to take it...scary shit happens when I haven't put any in my bag when I go out and have to stay out for a long period of time.
Why can't they make it in orange chewables? It's a pain in the ass to have to take it so frequently. Mitch once told me they're working on an extended release version, but it's not here yet.
Anyway, Dream-person: the old girl Sar, wherever she is, was begun on 100 mg per day, I was started on 300 mg 2x per day, played aroung with day dosing, night dosing. Used to help me sleep (but no dreaming, so no good), now 600 mg at bedtime won't touch the insomnia & sometimes have to take Xanax to sleep. So I ramped way the hell up.
But 100 per day CAN really affect you, remember Sar's comments from about 9 months ago. Take it slow, maybe work up to one 100 in am, one in early evening. Then if you like the buzz, add more till you reach your plateau. One tends to reach a cetain blood-level that works for your particular chemistry; the other factor is the particular meds you are taking in your cocktail. I have felt that it's a very safe drug to be on.
IS there a drug for mood stabilization more expensive than Neurontin? At least here in the states, it's quite the pricey item. I have insurance, so it's ok, thank goodness. Kelly - are you still on Neurontin? Or still doing the Depakote?
So keep at it Dreamer, the drug has worked very well for many people, including moi...
all the best,
Wendy

wendy:
it's so nice to have your input again.
basically, neuron. did not "cut it" for me alone. it does seem to augment other stabilizers, but not enough to make the 6 times a day a habit.
i'm on 2000 mg dep. now - very strong. i have continued to cycle more and more and have "attempted" suicide twice in the last six months.
but, thank you for pointing out that some folks are much more sensitive to neuron. than i am. i would think that even at a low dose, it's better to take it t/o the day as it does seem to have a short half life.

One problem walks through a hall of mirrors , so many problems so prescribed synthetic life ....wrapped up cosy rounded edges sweetness and light....
This here neurontin is STRONG benzo effect now...so floppy and tired plus the effexor's sedating effect
Feels at first like I've had a GOOD STIFF drink
Does this severe sedation subside ?If I was taking 100mg 3 times a day instead of just once I may as well remain horizontal and buy myself a tombstone.
My doc HAS got it wrong I've searched and see no reason why he would prescribe one daily also Sar did start on 100mg 3x daily ,
I'm s l o w zzzzsleepy.... Don't like it.
Had mild auditory and visual hallucinations yesterday...quit pleasant. If this tiredness continues ...what to do , what to do.
Maybe I should really quit effexor...but I'm frightened not of the withdrawal but losing that effexor feeling.
My doc is crap but gives the meds that I ask for ..it's up to me folks.
confused , mentally/physically bruised Dr.Eamer who could do with some serious affection: )
