Neurontin Weight gain

Posted by Meryl on March 24, 2002, at 19:28:47

My doc prescribed neurontin to me about 1 1/2 weeks ago but I am terrified to take it because I have heard that it causes a large weight gain. Does anyone know anything about this??? Please help.

Hi Meryl,

All I know at the moment is my own personal experience. At 600-900 mg I haven't gained an ounce. I also take Lamictal, klonopin, atenolol and a dash of seroquel.

No weight gain? Have you found it to be successful?

Meryl,

Yeah, I think it's soothing. I'm at 900 mg at the moment. I think neurontin helps smooth things out. It's more subtle than my other favorite anxiolytic, klonopin. So if I'm really anxious, overwrought, and can't relax, I take some klonopin ( I adjust the dose by the day as needed). But I recall a few afternoons when my nerves felt so utterly raw and jangled that I couldn't even tolerate the sound of a phone ringing and thought I'd catapult out of my skin. It wasn't my normal generalized anxiety per se, just hideously on edge. An extra 300 mg of neurontin soothed me within an hour. I never gave the weight thing a seceond thought - I always thought it was weight-neutral. Let's see what other folks have to say. At any rate, it might be worth giving it a try.

Emme,

Thanks for the information. I haven't found anything that helps my anxiety yet and I think I've been on just about everything. Hopefully this will do me some good. Sorry about all of the weight questions, but with some of my health problems, it is a concern.

Thanks again.

Meryl
