This is for a friend of mine who was diagnosed a year ago with aspergers.
He is a 20 year old Student, in th South of England.
He has been given alot of support by his Uni (bought a pc, found him "safe" accomodation etc) but he hasn;t been given anything about how he can be helped or help himself.
He is reluctant to go to a new GP alone while away from home, and has asked me for help.Any advice, web sites and experieces would be great.

Nikki, what sort of help does he wish? My oldest son is 26 & he has Asperger's too. It's not like there's a medication that can be taken to stop it as there's been found to be differences in actual brain structure - small differences but enough to cause it.
My son needs an AD for his depression but over time (& realisation of what it was he had that made him different), he's learned to embrace his difference & use it to the full. It doesn't mean he still doesn't have difficulties in social context but he's developed strategies (with my help & suggestions) to overcome these difficulties. Both him & I have come to see how positive Asperger's can be if handled correctly.
I'd be more than glad to send you more information or specific suggestions, if you'd send specific questions too. Otherwise, I feel I may just blither on about areas that don't necessarily apply to your friend. I'll include my e-mail address too if you'd rather write directly to me: isomorphix@hotmail.com

Hi Nikki,
I live in the South of England and just over a month ago was diagnosed with Aspergers. There is a charity run in the south-west called "Dimensions For Living". There are support groups across the area and it is run by a very nice and helpful lady who has helped me tremendously. The lady who runs the charity also does free counselling and has helped me to make claims for benefits. In the South West my NHS psychologists is familiar with Aspergers and perhaps your friend could see him. I think psychotherapy plays an important part in learning to live with Aspergers although the SSRIs remain commonly used medications as Aspergers is milder form of Autism which may be caused by a deficit of serotonin. I know we have some on the SSRI's and one also one on Thyroxine. I can give you lots of details. If you want to contact me for further details to pass onto your friend you can at remeron@supanet.com.
