Polypharmaphiliac at the wide gaits of hell

Posted by Er on March 4, 2002, at 22:28:34

Hi folks,
Well, today was my appointment with the dark narcomancer of dispensation, and he started me on the ol' Luvox. Now I have color coordinated meds so I think I'm finally straight (Wellbutrin-cerulean being my fave). For those of you who read and responded to my post from last week, thanks again, I'll respond to the new threads where applicable...so, my Psychology Today...
Here's my question, and it proves that my clever subject line wasn't just for hilarity's sake. My pdoc always seems to prescribe the maximum dosage of anything he gives me...for example, it was Wellbutrin 400 to start (excluding the two weeks of building up to the dosage of course..)....Ritalin, BANG! 40mg a day (which is not max so I read but it's from from min)...Luvox 300mg a day. I wouldn't be surprised if his receptionist blows curare tipped darts into the clients' backs as they walk out the door...I'd also like to announce a littany of curses to my Insurance company who clubbed me over my head to the tune of 130 bucks today for my deductible. Though that's neither here nor there.
YEah, so back on the subject, sorry, ummm...yeah, does anyone have anything they can say on the matter of my doc's penchant for high doseing?

Hyperactively yours and yours and yours,
Eric

Er,
not a lot to add, just that my various GPs/shrinks have whacked me to full tilt straight off too. Personally I think it's best to go to top whack, see if you get a positive reaction, if so, try and adjust accordingly. BUT THAT'S JUST MY PERSONAL OPINION (before I get flamed&slated for being pushy :-] )

Cheers,
pete.

At least you don't have to keep going back to that doctor for a dosage increase.

Well, my pdoc is definitely a polypharmaphiliac. And she does not hesitate to write scripts for each med at much higher doses than I can tolerate(though clearly not the maximum dose allowed...). I tell her that there is no way I can take all that, and she says build up slowly, blah, blah..

So I fill my scripts, but I have at least a three month supply of every med I take!
Just so you don't feel like you are the only one on poly pharmacy, I take

Lithium 112 mgs, written for 450 mg
Neurontin 600 mgs, written for 900mgs
Depakote 250 mgs, written for 500 mgs
Celexa 1.3 mgs, written for 4 mgs
Amitriptyline 20 mgs, as written!

I tell my pdoc that I just can't handle the amount she wants me to take. I get bad side effects, dizziness, blah, hypomania, or whatever. She always seems so surprised, and I have been seeing her for ten years now! I am a petite person. Sometimes I think doctors think all patients are 250 pound men!

Yikes! 20 mg Ritalin and 400 mgs WB, I would be running marathons, never eating, never sleeping, telling people off and grinding my teeth down to their nubs!! But that's just me and my sensitive nervous system...
Do you HAVE to take the amount perscribed, or do you also have some discression about the amounts that you can tolerate? Maximum dosing does not always guarantee maximum effect, IMHO.

All the best,
Chloe

Chloe, that's exactly it...Yeah, 20mg of Ritalin TWICE a day as a starting dose...first time I took that much I read a 400 page manual about 3dsmax in like 2.5 hours...and the only thing I could seem to eat were my nails.

:)

It does *seem* like what your are taking is too much for your drugstream.

Many dosages of meds are determined by weight (mgs/kg). So perhaps your are not the best candidate for your pdoc's maximum dosing strategy. Can you speak with your pdoc doc about this?

And maybe the ritalin is something you could use prn, since you are on so much Wellbutrin?...I hate the thought of you losing your appetite when you are on the very thin side as it is. Not to mention the toll that "speedy" feeling can have on your nervous system.

Hope you are feeling a little less hyper today :)
Chloe

Actually I have felt horrible for two days...I feel like I've been drinking cough syrup by the pint...my balance is so wacky I must look like C3PO when I walk. My knees tremble so uch I almost fell down the stairs at work, fortunately no one was watching. At night, I toss and turn, rock my body unable to sleep...and ever few minutes or so, my teeth start chattering, my limbs occasionally as well. I'm not quite asleep and I'm not quite awake. My pdoc never returned my phone call. I need sleep, I'm not sure whether I should stop the new medication immediately or what the hell.??? What if I stop but tommorrow the symptoms could have let up? Of course, I said that yesterday...oh yeah, it's Luvox. Some advice would be the sum of earthly bliss.

Eric
