My Thumb vein broke??

Posted by SoS on March 4, 2002, at 3:36:24

The reason I'm putting this here is that I'm wondering if it had anything to do with my meds, and I don't really know any way to find out. I thought u guys might know some things I don't.
I had been running for about 20 minutes, got off the treadmill, changed my clothes and then I felt a sharp pain in my thumb, almost like the kind you feel in your foot when you get a cramp? I looked at it and a huge blue bump had formed in the crease. In a few minutes the blueness and the pain went away and it went down somewhat. It was still a little swollen for the rest of the night. I think it had something to do with running, but could it be because of my meds too? I'm on Depakote, risperdal, wellbutrin and a little paxil (today's my last day on it). It was probably nothing, but I want to be sure. Thanks.
MM

It might have to do with your meds indeed. Many ADs (SSRIs especially if I remember well, as well as Effexor) can make you bleed more easily than usual.

I bruised a lot the first couple of months I took Effexor XR, with no or little apparent reason, so I asked my doc about it. She suggested NOT taking aspirin or anything else that may have anticoagulent properties with my AD. I was taking Aspirin for headaches, so now that I switched to Tylenol, I bruise a bit less easily, although more than without ADs.

There were a few links about unusual bleeding on this board in the past few months too. It seems to be a pretty common problem. You should probably tell your doc about your thumb on your next visit.

i suppose it could be some kinda surge inside from the workout. Perhaps it's from holding the handle bars tightly on the treadmill?

I wasn't holding the handle bars that tight, but who knows. It was probably a freak thing. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something I didn't know, like these meds cause blood clots or something. I'm going to mention it to my pdoc though.
Thanks
