I think they should bring back a reformulated version of Dexamyl. The original version, apparently geared toward bored housewives or the 'verbally inhibited' contained Dexedrine + Amobarbital (a barbituate) in an extended release Spansule pill.
Obviously, since Amobarbital may have been what killed Marilyn Monroe, no one (except me) would take Dexamyl in its original form so they should come out with "Dexaplon" (Dexedrine + Klonopin), or Dexativan (Dexedrine + Ativan).
Dexaplon or Dexativan would be perfect antidepressants & social phobia medications because their two ingredients cancel out each others side effects.
I'm sure they would work better & with less side effects than that SSRI krapola they are peddling to patients nowadays- "hey take this pill that takes a month to work & will make you impotent or unable to ejaculate"- now there is an ingredient for a happy marriage!).

3Beers, You are a scream!
By the way, I've seen that ad. When I've been on Dex, my house is still cluttered. Hmmm. . .I wonder why Dex doesn't make me want to vacuum. Maybe because I want to do more important things.
Did you ever take an SSRI plus Dex? For me, the effects completely cancel each other out. I think that might be due to severe dopamine depletion caused by both of them.

For a few years I was a really bad caffeine
addict, like 12-15 diet cokes a day and then
I would chase this with 6 beers a night just to
relieve my anxiety. I was self medicating my
bipolar disorder.Anyways, after many medication failures, I went
on the Dexoplan formula. At that point I joked to
my friends that my treatment had basically elevated
from taking caffeine and alcohol to tranquilizers
and speed. Anyways, This was the best thing since sliced bread. It really got my life on track
for 2 months. I felt soooo wonderfull. After two
months the anti-manic properties of the Klonopin
started to wear out and the Adderall (i.e. dexedrine)
made me manic and my life spiraled out of control.
I lost 95 % of my net worth on a couple bad stock option
trades, I then abruptly quit my job as I was hypomanic
and felt that I could make a zillion dollars at this
silicon valley startup company (the company got sunk
in a bad tech crash). I told the company I
was signing up to work for that I could be out there in
2 weeks (which was bullshit). It took me 6 weeks and 12
flight changes to get my self packed as I developed severe
ADD symptoms and was getting no sleep. I lost 30 lbs of
weight.Eventually I made it to Ca to start my new job,
but I couldn't find a doctor to prescribe Dexoplan (which
wouldn't work anymore anyways).
I went to the emergency room of a hospital as i was
suicidal and told the physician that I had prescriptions
for the medicines on file for Klonopin + Adderall in TX
and he could verify it and he should fill it for me. He
looked up Adderall and told me " this is methamphetamine"
at which point I corrected him and said , " no sir this is
different salts of levo and dextro amphetamine", he
directed me to the crisis nurses who gave me a sheet
of phone numbers for addiction clinics. I left the
hospital seriously depressed. I slipt into a suicidal
depression, but luckickly finally got the right treatment
(lamictal) and started to get my life in shape. I goofed
up my job in CA but was able to pull things together and
restart a career in Austin before everything fell to pieces. This is my Dexoplan Story, of course other people
might last longer than 2 months. But I must admit
that the 2 months I was on it was quite a blast.
If only they could figure out a way to completely
insure that benzos are stims would not crap out or
go haywire. Some day. Of course other people may
do much better on Dexoplan.Regards,
John

Dexedrine + Memantine.Potentially lower the possibility of addiction
and remove any toxic glutamatergic transmission.-John

Three Beers,
Looks like you found a real "Golden Oldy" there. As the saying goes "if you can remember the 60s - you weren't there". About all I can remember of the 60s is Dexamyl and Dexedrine. I always preferred straight Dex. (additives got in the way of the euphoria - little Ballentine Ale didn't hurt).
Can't say the Dex. worked out long term - not the best drug for bipolar. I got into it kind of heavy last time out and almost took the big dirt nap. Never tried Dexapin like Rich mentioned but did the Dex. Valium combo. that one will put you on the "yellow brick road".
Loved the old add......the only thing that saved us was our youth!!

The book Cognitive Therapy or Depression a cognitive perspective (I forget which but they are both by Beck) shows studies done in the 50's comparing the efficacy of Bariturate+Amphetamine drugs versus Imipramine. They seemed to do about equally well amongst patient samples or if one did better it was the Barb/Amph combo pill. AKA "goofballs"Scott

Hi Scott,Thanks for the reference on Aaron Beck's books.......another "blast from the past". Aaren Beck was to cognative therapy what Freud was to psychiatry and just about as useful in the modern day treatment of what we are discussing on this board. Talk about a guy with an agenda - Beck was determined to displace drug treatment with cognative therapy. Don't know where he got his test data on Imipramine/Dexamyl but I sure wouldn't take it at face value. He is right about one thing - "goofballs" (that's what my parents called it) users like myself referred to Dex/Dexamyl as "script speed" and Methamphetimine was called "crank". Enough silly history - time for bed.

Chris,
As a muse I tried dxm with wellbutrin to see if it
would help prevent poopout for me and it worked, but
I aborted the experiment. The dxm 1/2 life is
really short, you need to take it many times a
day. Also it can be neurotoxic.
There is a product in clinical trials called
Neurodex that is dxm + a cyp450 2d6 inhibitor
in 1 pill. This gives it a long half life with
once a day dosing. The company is looking into
approval for I believe neuropathic pain and borderline
personality disorder, but it could be used for
things that memantine, etc are used for.Regards,
John
