JohnX2 Best AP to augment SSRI?

Posted by spike4848 on February 10, 2002, at 21:04:13

Hey John,

I have read many of your posts about Prozac and Zyprexa. What is the best AP to augment an SSRI .... zyprexa, serequel, risperdal, geodon?

spike Zyprexa hands down. i took them all with an A/D. the only thing you worry about is cholseterol changes. my choles/trigl shot up on 5mgs BID. same with risperdal. geodon did not cause any cardio changes but was activating at 40mgs BID... i found serequel to be very weak and inaffective as an augment agent.. i have a saying that everything goes better with a little Zyprexa.
it would be nice if Lilly did not have the plant issues right now or we would have the injectable form out right now.

Hi Spike,

I'm afraid I don't have a good answer to your question.
Probably this one can vary substantially on an indivual basis.
I personally have only tried Zyprexa.
Maybe others on the news group can comment on
the other meds. As far as side effects go,
Zyprexa can cause a bit of weight gain, but may
be one of the better medicines for helping
with agitation/anxiety as it blocks a noradrenaline
receptor. All of the medicines block a serotonin
receptor that causes anxiety, specifically the
"5-ht2" receptor, but they have pretty substantial
differences outside of the serotonin blocking and
dopamine blocking mechanisms.

Regards,
John

Hi Ross,

Thanks for the nice summary of your experiences on all the anti-psychotics.

What are you refering too with the "plant issues"
and "injectable form" ?

I read all the posts on pbabble and I decided to
start with Zyprexa as a result. I haven't really
had any problems tolerating it but I am having
some clenching/twitching in my hand and am a bit
paranoid about it being Zyprexa related. However
everything I read and info from my pdoc suggests
it is highly unlikely. I get these twitches on
and off even before Zyprexa so it might just be
a bogus chance association.

Thanks for more info,
John

I would like to add to this discussion by asking if anyone knows which, if any of the newer atypical antipsychotics have additional effects other than the blockade of 5-HT2 and DA receptors that could possibily interfere with the effects of an SSRI by further modulation of the levels of
serotonin i.e further re-uptake inhibition? serotonin release?

Thanks Everyone (nm)
