I just wanted to share with you people that Ive tried practically every anti depressant you can imagine with little or no success. I was diagnosed as a rapid cycler bi-polar who seemed to be very depressed just on lithium. So I tried zoloft, paxil, effexor, wellbutrin, celexa, remeron, provigil, and elavil. This drug frenzy took place over the past two years, and some of them, ESPECIALLY paxil, gave me these unbelieveable side effects before and after i quit taking them. Strangly enough, all of my effects were either way worse than usual(vomiting, paranoia, psychosis, etc), or completely unusual alltogether(i gained weight on wellbutrin and lost weight on paxil).
Anyways I asked my doctor about selegiline (deprenyl) and he told me it was a very mild anti-depressant used only for old people and parkinsons. He didnt seem to want to give it to me. He told me to try Provigil, which ended in disaster 6 days later after i started believeing people were arguing with me when they clearly were not.
Reluctantly, my doctor finally listened to me about two months ago. Well it appears to be that not only did a measely 5mg of it work for me combined with 50mg of HTP, but it worked FAR better than any of those other drugs with NO SIDE EFFECTS WHATSOEVER. As a matter of fact, if you go to www.biopsychiatry.com youll see that selegiline actually INCREASES LIFE SPAN and protects your brain from damage!
If youre one of those bi-polar types that responds almost the exact opposite as you should to most anti depressants, try this. And also my sex drive has rejuvinated past the lithium, actually far better than it was before the lithium.

Joel, I am happy to hear that selegiline has worked for you. That is what I have been trying to get across to people! It seems to actually work great (i.e. sex drive) especially when used in combination with phenylalanine, vitain B6, 5-HTP, etc. And not only that it works good for not only depression but keeps your brain healthy and protects it from alot of neurotoxins found everywhere in the environment (including MAO-B itself!). Studies that I have read about deal with unipolar and treatment-resistant people, but you, being bipolar, seem to have success with it so that's good to hear. If only more people would give it a try before screwing around with all kinds of SSRI's. -Jason911

If you ever raise the dosage, Id be very careful about combining it with OTC supplements like 5-HTP. 5-HTP plus selegiline could be very dangerous. Also, there might be a new antidepressant marketed within the next year that uses selegiline. The "MAOI patch" is awaiting decision right now at the FDA.

It seems to give me a mild boost in all of my areas resulting in a much less "coarse" feeling. And yes in doses above 10-15mg can inhibit MAO-A after MAO-B, and people who smoke cigarettes (like me) dont realize that nicotene inhibits MAO-B as well. So you should be careful.
