The researcher(s) who come up with a cure for my depression will be awarded the Nobel Prize.

Well, that statement shows your desperation and determination to rid yourself of depression, and the recognition that it might not be all that easy. :) It made me laugh because it's exactly what I told a psychiatrist of mine about 12 years ago. (To my knowledge, he hasn't yet been awarded the Nobel Prize.) :)

Keep trying, and keep your spirits up.

Thank you for the encouragement. By the way, I like your screen name. You've heard the story (I think it's a true story)about the reason that there is no Nobel Prize in Mathematics, haven't you?

You're welcome. No, I don't recall hearing that one before, but then I'm taking Aricept. :)

The reason there is no Nobel Prize in Mathematics is that Alfred Nobel's wife had an affair with a mathematician, and Nobel never got over his hatred of mathematicians. He decided all mathematicians were bad and none deserved a Nobel Prize. I've heard this story from a number of different sources, and I assume it's true.

No cure for depression yet among the discoveries of nobel laureates, but maybe there will be some day. Two years ago, the prize in medicing/physiology was given to 3 scientists who discovered how dopamine works in the brain and how synapses change in learning and memory. Maybe there is hope....

See this page for more info:

http://www.nobel.se/medicine/laureates/2000/press.html

Last night, I watched the 4th episode of Secret Life of the Brain, and they did lament that we still do not know what causes depression. It was a good episode--explained the role of the amygdala, etc. in feelings and in PTSD and depression.

Bekka, I used to believe that there was no way my depression would get better, but it has gotten better. Not perfect, and my medication regimen isn't perfect, but I am doing a whole lot better than I was or ever hoped to be.

I tend to agree with you, Scott, there are probably many many types of depression, caused by combinations of genetic factors, environmental factors, childhood influences, head injuries, viruses, and who knows what else. True for other types of mental illness too, years ago I read an interesting book called Welcome Silence by Carol North, she was diagnosed with schizophrenia and was not helped by any of the meds then available. Eventually she entered an experimental treatment using kidney dialysis. The research showed no benefit for dialysis in schizophrenia and the experiments were stopped, but for her it worked and at the time she wrote the book she had gone on to become a psychiatrist, with no recurrence of symptoms. She probably had some rare subtype of schizophrenia that was responsive to this treatment, and there are probably many rare types of depression that might respond to some rare medication, but of course the drug companies aren`t going to do research that might help only a small number of people. I think most of the AD`s on the market say flat out "mechanism of action is unknown" and most doctors think there are just two types of depression-if meds help it`s biological, otherwise it`s probably a personality disorder and your own fault!
