I am new to the board and need some help. I started getting panic attacks 1 year ago and was started on Klonopin 0.5 mg per day. The panic is gone, but what is left is low energy-flatness-moderate depression. I have tried the TCA's, SSRI's and effexor with alittle help, but mostly they cause increased anxiety. I have tried to decrease the klonopin, but the panic returns. I don't know which way to turn now. Maybe-
1 add provigil
2 add serzone
3 replace klonopin with depakote
4 replace klonopin with zyprexaAny advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to our happy home Johnhill,
With the Serzone you could treat the panic attacks and lower the Klonopin if necessary in order to give you more energy during the day:
"Fifteen patients with panic disorder participated in a 12-week treatment trial with open-label nefazodone. Nefazodone was well-tolerated with minimal side effects; none of the patients reported sexual dysfunction, and only one patient experienced weight gain. Although the response rate was lower than that found with most other antipanic medications, given its favorable side effect profile, nefazodone may be a good alternative for patients apprehensive about potential adverse drug reactions."

I'm puzzled about something & wonder if you could clear it up for me. You're asking for advice about meds, but are you the same person who posted this below? (Both have same user name)
..."I was on several antidepressant with moderate sucess. I took effexor for 2 years, then Paxil for 1.5 years. Boy the side effects were tough. Then I bought Dr. Burns' book and read 10 pages a night. It was like a lightbulb went off in my head. My thinking patterns were distorted, and with the techniques in the Burn's book I corrected the self defeating behavior. No more medication for me, off for 3 years.
I suggest everyone here stopped obsessing on the medications and put some effort into therapy. The medications are just a crutch, a temporary bandaid, placebo. All you people need is alittle time on the therapist couch. It will cure depression and anxiety.

I'm curious about this too. Dr. Bob, is it possible that one user would accidentally post as another, as johnnyjohn says he did? That seems peculiar to me.

Well, it would be a first if one name was in the "name" box and the server substituted another...

Dr. Bob:
Did you remove my two posts about David Burns and CBT versus medication.
They belonged in PB (I don't read PSB) because they explained that medications are the only solution for some individuals; CBT alone will not do.
And I didn't consider them uncivil, given the condescending manner in which Burns treats his readers and the amount of time and money and effort I wasted on CBT when it clearly was not the answer and my own therapist (who had me read the Burns books) admitted it was not working when I said repeatedly there was no improvement and wanted to stop. As it happened, it took years for me to find medications that helped.
