Posted by JDavid on January 15, 2002, at 17:37:54

Hi,
i would like to add ginkgo biloba like a little activant, energizer and stimulant.
Any experience like right effects and side effects.
What dosage?
Does it helped you?
How long does it take to work?
Thanks for your help.

I don't want to throw cold water on your idea but the reason ginko biloba has an energising effect is due to its blood-thinning properties. Blood doesn't clot as easily & blood flow is supposed to be increased to the brain. It can be dangerous if you already have normal - low blood clotting ability. One patient was reported to have almost died during an operation for not mentioning to the surgeon that they used ginko biloba. It needs to be stopped a couple of weeks before surgery or even tooth extraction.

My own opinion (& I don't mind if others disagree) but just a little aerobic exercise every day or two will boost blood circulation to the brain far better with no side-effects.

I take Ginkgo at the dose recommended by physicians to counter SSRI sexual side effects. The dose is 240 mg per day (120mg twice a day). It works well for that purpose.

I have not noticed any increase in energy but my energy level was adequate to begin with. If you have or develope bleeding problems, check with your doctor since Ginkgo may act as an anticoagulant.

Thank you for contributing to the group. Gingko has plenty of potential....

Cohen AJ, Bartlik B. Ginkgo biloba for antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction. J Sex Marital Ther 1998;

"Ginkgo has also been investigated as a treatment for sexual dysfunction resulting from antidepressant medications. An extract from the ginkgo leaf was 84% effective in treating antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction predominantly caused by selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Women were more responsive than were men; dosages ranged from 60 mg per day to 120 mg twice daily."
