Constipation on Effexor

Posted by mr.scott on January 15, 2002, at 13:36:45

Is this pretty common? Even at 75mg, cause if it is, I'll probably have to ditch it unless someone has any Bright ideas.

I don't know how common it is Scott, but I had constipation on Effexor at every dose. It did get worse at higher doses if I recall correctly. I've had constipation on many other meds also, though.

It is common, as it is with many meds, not just ADs. Ideas? Of course! Eat fibers !

Del Monte prunes in syrup (high in fiber) with yogourt for dessert for example (yogourt, choose the kinds with active bacteria, helps in keeping your intestinal flora healthy and doing its job). Add Metamucil to your orange juice in the morning. Eat oranges (not just the juice, but the fibers of the fruit too). Etc... Not all at once though, that could be a day to remember.

I don't you should switch med just for that. Talk to your doc if need be, or your pharmacist, I am sure they have other ideas and you can find something that does not bother you too much. I eat prines and yogourt myself and I am on Effexor XR, 75 mg a day. Either for dessert at night, or for breakfast. I eat oranges too these days, they are sooo good!

that was for mr scott, rather !

I've had constipation the first month or so.
This side-effect, at least for me, was transient.

Hmmm... I'm already taking Fiber and massive doses of fish oil, but I'll try your recommendations before throwing in the towel.

Thanks,

Careful however, too much fiber in your diet can do the exact opposite and exacerbate the constipation. You may have to experiment...

Took 4000mg of EPA (Fish Oil), my regular fiber supplement, 500mg of Magnesium, 300 mg of adrafinil, a cup of starbucks, and I was fine...

Sorry for the topic, but it's almost funny what we have to accept as part of our chemotherapy.

Oh why oh why can't I just take 20 mg of prozac and have merely a delayed orgasm and no other side effects. There was such a time and I forgot for a couple years that I was actually depressed.

Maybe that is what is so distressing...The Side effects remind me that I'm screwed up in my head even when I may feel okay mostly.

Milk of magnesia is okay for this side effect. Take ALOT of water with this. You may have to wait a couple of minutes after drinking the magnesia suspension before you can drink water.
And shake the bottle well before using it. If you are really bad off you can add something like sennekot. If you are a big wuss you might find the magnesia too distasteful to use regularly, but there are flavored kinds which are a little bit kinder.
