ECT not effective?

Posted by Anna P. on January 15, 2002, at 13:15:36

I've read that ECT isn,t effective for atypical depression. I'm just after the first session unilateral,
and have no results. I'm very dissapointed.

Anna:

I'm no expert on ECT, nor have I undergone the procedure myself, but have done a reasonable amount of reading on it. From what I've gleaned, lack of response to a single session is nothing to be suprised at. In fact, a noticeable response to one session seems to be the exception, rather than the norm. Also, response to unilateral treatments is often harder to come by than the bilateral ones. I think they always start out with unilateral because of evidence of less effect on memory and cognitive dysfunction. Anyway, hang in there... lack of response to a single session is not very indicative of response to further treatment.
