Let's take a poll if someone should be blocked!!!!

Posted by JohnX2 on January 13, 2002, at 1:13:16

Hi Big Brother,

Over on the Silicon Investor Newsgroup,
you should see the complete and utter disregard
of courteousy shown towards others. Yet many of the
groups are well monitored using a DEMOCRATIC process
whereby the users of the group vote whether or not
to ban someone fom posting from the newsgroup.
Until this policy or some other non Orwellean
process is adopted, I will no longer be posting
to psycho-babble. Things have gotton out of hand.

good day,
john.

Can you explain and/or elaborate? I'm new to this group, and I don't understand what the problem is. So far, I think this group is pretty good, and it's infinitely better than the alt.support groups, which have no standards and allow all sorts of off topic, distracting, annoying posts, most of which seem less like "support" and more like codependent "enabling" and mutual mental masturbation. The standards on Psychobabble are higher, the posters are very well informed, intelligent and eager to help.

I just got a terrible flashback to middle school and high school. Sometimes "democratic" doesn't mean fair. Why would a "democratic" poll be any better than Dr. Bob simply posting the rules and enforcing them? Most people who are blocked realize in advance that they will be blocked, whether for incivility or for violating the illegal drugs source policy. Fair warning is given. So you might say these people choose to block themselves in order to make a point. Fair enough. They have the right to do so, although the offending posts might be deleted and so the point might never be made.
Yes, you might say, but the majority will have decided on the rules and who gets blocked, so the majority will be better off. This brings me back to my school memories. The majority may be better off, but who will protect the minority? This site is also supposed to be supportive for those people who don't necessarily subscribe to the majority view. Currently it is. And I am one vulnerable and often minority view babbler who hopes that the site will always remain that way.
Just my humble opinion.

Incidentally, this is really a PB Admin discussion, and I suppose I should have posted this there and provided a link, but I really don't know how to do that. Is there a tutorial?

Dear JohnX2,

I am sorry your leaving babble .... we will miss your input and ideas. The more opinions presented .... the more educated and informed we all will be. The greater the chance we will beat this illness called depression.

Unfornuately, this is not only a board for the exchange of ideas .... it is also a study. A study Dr. Bob has devoted a great deal of energy. This study provides us an opportunity discuss many many issues with others dealing with depression .... and often without babble many of us are isolated. It seems like there are VERY FEW issues are limited/banned. I am not sure why, but some individual repeatedly violate these policies .... often with previous warning by Dr. Bob. And what is a ban for seven days .... certain not life inprisonment.

Thanks Dr Bob for this site ....

I know Dr Bob ... This post should probably be redirected to Babble adminstration

In defense to Dr. Bob, I knew Calvary Hill was going to be blocked before Dr. Bob even did it! He has asked over and over again not to post anything illegal on this site. I think maybe even Calvary Hill knew he would be blocked, but wanted to get his point across. So be it. I think we are being unfair to Dr. Bob. He has to enforce the rules or things could really get out of hand. Just my humble opinion!

On second thought. . . I wish to add something to my previous post. I do prefer Psychobabble over the undisciplined, "free for all" atmosphere of the usenet groups; however, something has occurred to me that might be important for Dr. Bob's study. As I understand clinical research, when patients are chosen to participate in a study, first they must meet certain criteria in order to be considered as possible candidates. Once they meet those criteria, however, shouldn't anyone who meets those criteria be allowed to participate, regardless of their point of view? I understand that you cannot eliminate people from a clinical study just because you fear they might cause the results to be skewed in a particular way. Dr. Bob, are you eliminating clinical subjects/deleting posts that will cause an outcome that is opposite to the one you are counting on or hoping for? Are you manipulating the data?

From a support group standpoint, I prefer Psychobabble's format. From a research study standpoint, however, deleting data that you don't like or that doesn't fit your theories, is an unacceptable practice.

Dinah -
I got it there by selecting the reply option on this thread and then, on the preview screen, selecting the Admin board from the list at the top. Much to my amazement it actually worked for me! - Jane

Thanks for doing that! Further follow-ups should definitely be posted there...
