FDA Serzone Warning-Anyone Else Hear About It?

Posted by dee1960 on January 12, 2002, at 16:16:30

My pdoc just told me Thurs. that the FDA sent him a letter with a "black box" warning about possible liver problems with Serzone. I searched the archives here and didn't find anything. Did I miss it? I found a few references on the web; already quite a few lawyers are jumping on the bandwagon with websites advertising their services for anyone who has taken Serzone. I had to write out a statement for my pdoc to the effect that I have been notified by him of the FDA warning & choose to continue taking the Serzone anyway. He insisted on liver function bloodwork the same day & wants to repeat it every other month and even suggested we might one day think of switching antidepressants. I've been on 400mg a day for a year now and have taken Serzone more than any other antidepressant for the last 4 yrs.

Yes, I subscribe to Med Watch & receieved a warning about Serzone. I previously posted this warning. Liver damage leading to transplants & some deaths have been reported.

For more information, including the revised label, PPI, and Dear Healthcare Professional letter, go to the MedWatch 2002 Safety Information page at http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/SAFETY/2002/safety02.htm#serzon

Hi,

Maybe you should think about switching medications now ? Its a shame that they only find about this serious side effect when people have been taking it for years. My doctor told me that he never prescribes Serzone, he said that he didn't like the results he got with it. Although he said I could try it if my sexual side effects didn't get better with Wellbutrin. Obviously I won't be going near the stuff now, so Thanks for your warning.

Yes, I am looking for another antidepressant. The problem is that I've been on every SSRI except Luvox with bad results because of resulting mania/hypomania. Any suggestions would be very welcome. I am BP I (looks like II to some pdocs because of PMDD; the PMDD is what necessitates an antidepressant of some kind). I have Spring/Summer mania/hypomania and Fall/Winter depression (SADD?) also; can't afford a light box. The Serzone has never fully helped, but it's the only one that hasn't sent me into twilight zone. Thanks.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I printed out the FDA letter and am going to show it to my primary care doctor and gastroenterologist, as well as pdoc.
