Hello,Has anyone had experience using Omega 3 essental fatty acids derived from Flax or Fish oil for mood disorders? Apparently some 'reasonably convincing' material is put forth by Dr. Andrew Stoll of Harvard Med School in his book The Omega-3 Connection (which I'm reading). Anyone had any luck with Fish Fat or is Stoll a Fish Qwack?

Scott - Stoll may have something with the omega-3s, but Dr.J.Calabrese did pick apart Stoll's study fairly well. Let's just say that the concentrations of omega-3 needed for a sustained effect haven't been produced in a suitable dosage form, yet. - Cam

There have been instances, not so much of fish oil, but with many other oils, especially the plant ones like Flax Seed, Evening Primrose, etc, to possibly cause *manic* symptoms in BP'ers. (Stoll, I believe, mentions this in his book.)

Well...I decided to try taking the Fish oil according to Stoll's research. Flawed or not I'll try anything twice. Right now I'm taking 1500mg of EPA a day. Just started.

You might want to try Hemp Seed Oil, as it has the higest concentration of all 3 EFA's of any plant or animal. The sea is a dumping ground of wastes of all kind.

Agreed with St. James here, if you buy it in bulk it is even cheaper than flax (which is almost always cheaper than fish). Only problem I see here is that the fed. gov. is making moves against ALL food products made of hemp, regardless of THC content (which is in all cases, by fed. regulations, so small that it'd be impossible to get stoned off the products). I don't know for sure that this includes supplemental products like hemp seed oil, but I believe it does.

If I remember correctly, Flax does not have a good shelf life, not sure about Hemp. You would want to check on this.
You will not find Hemp Seed oil in a a national "health food store" like GNC. Try
a real health food store or on line.Hemp Seed Oil is legal now, I know nothing of what the gov "plans" to do. Hemp Seed oil comes from rope hemp, very low in THC. As with all hemp/pot the seeds contain a very low concentration of THC, unlike other parts of the plant. Then the cold process to extract the oil
filters even more THC.So you start with a plant that has close to nill
THC, use the part that has the least THC, and filter from there. Why do we elect a government
that has a problem with this ? There is no question as to the benifits of EFA and while there are many sources for EFA's but none contain all 3 in any significant concentration.james

Where is EPA available? I saw a show yesterday that said it was not yet.

Hello Sid,
Goto www.omegabrite.com. I ordered it and they accidentally gave me two packs instead of one. They called and said keep it which I thought was nice. It isn't pure EPA, though it's as close as you can find. They company is owned by Dr. Andrew Stoll's wife who happens to be another Psychiatrist from Harvard like himself. Stoll did all the double blind studies on the oil. His book which is new is in the library as well. The studies done are a lot better than anything done on St. Johns or SAM-e.
