I've done a few researches on the net for hyperhymia (which is a kind of mild hypomania within normal ranges of social and working functioning) and found that it could be considered as a condition belonging to the bipolar II spectrum.
I've been hyperthymic all my life through before getting depressed and i somehow sense it's still there even though i'm dhysthymic; subtle signs of it show up as soon as i feel better, even though it happens only for very short periods.
Do you think this could be an evidence for a treatment with mood stabilizers? Are any of you been diagnosed as bipolar II or III since they've been hyperthymic? Are mood stabilizers contraindicated for people suffering from anhedonia since they might sometimes flatten the affect ?
Thanks in advance

anna laura, I'm in the process of trying to figure this out for myself. I was on Zyprexa, and it helped a great deal for a while, but then I sunk into a deeper depression. I'm trying Lamictal and basically what my pdoc said is if the lamictal works, then I'm BPII. I'm also on xanx and Effexor XR, although as soon as I am on a "working dose" of the lamictal he has promised I can go off the effexor. I'm reading touched by fire by Kay Redfield Jamison (recc. by my pdoc) to see if my basically high-energy personality (when I'm not depressed) is actually Hyperthymic. Sorry to have rambled on. But I'd try the mood stablizers and see. You can always go off of them.

Does it bother you to be hyperthymic?

No, it doesn't bother me at all ! I wish i could regain that state! The last time i've been fully hyperthymic was eleven years ago.
The point i'm trying to make is that i need to find a drug which is more suitable for me. I've been trying TCA nad SSRI, i'm actually taking venlafaxine (effexor) which increased my motivation but didn't solve my main problem which is anhedonia. i was wondering if taking mood stabilizers could bring back my good mood again ,since i've heard that the underlaying hyperthymic state could be a predictive factor for drug treatment with those kind of drugs.

I dont know if this will just confuse things in this discussion, but...I love the hyperthymic part too, however, it is the crash afterwards that is so terrible. It is the Up and Down up and down, some times in the same day, multiple times...The MS, depakote, has evened out both ends, which is a choice I make. Some dullness. It is not a 'solution', but it is more tolerable.

Ok, I understand. And I think what Susan said makes sense too, about the crashing after the good feeling being so bad.
